Remembering how their relationship had become strained because of David, Eli never expected Natalie to still care about her. Especially after her attitude and words the last time they spoke.
Eli looked at their clasped hands. She felt uncomfortable, but that feeling was covered by the relief of knowing that there was still someone who sympathized with her. “You think all of that is ridiculous too, right? I’m not like what they’re saying.”
Natalie nodded quickly. “Of course. All of it is a lie and completely ridiculous. I know you would never cheat on David. I even argued with several people to defend you.”
The girl looked sincere. “I tried to explain what really happened, but it seems like they don’t care about the truth. They only believe what they want to believe.”
“Natalie...” Eli called, her voice trembling. “You... really did all that? For me?”
Natalie nodded again. “Of course, Eli. Even though you and David have broken up, our friendship won’t end. I know perfectly well that you’re not the cheap kind of girl they’re gossiping about. I’m the one who knows you, and they don’t. And I won’t let them talk about you any worse than this.”
Eli nodded and looked at Natalie with regret. She had thought that Natalie might not want to be friends with her anymore after she and David broke up. Especially since she had once felt somewhat disappointed by Natalie’s attitude, which she sometimes could not understand.
But now, it was her ex-boyfriend’s best friend who was accompanying her and defending her. “Thank you, Natalie. But you didn’t have to argue with other people. This is my problem. I don’t want you to get into trouble just because of me.”
“Your problem is my problem too, Eli. Like I just said, we’re friends.” Natalie hugged Eli. “It’s only natural for me to defend you. You don’t need to feel burdened.”
Eli returned Natalie’s hug, and at that moment, she felt so warm. For a moment, she felt safe because at least there was one person who believed her and even defended her.
