Natalie nodded quickly. “Of course. All of it is a lie and completely ridiculous. I know you would never cheat on David. I even argued with several people to defend you.”

The girl looked sincere. “I tried to explain what really happened, but it seems like they don’t care about the truth. They only believe what they want to believe.”

“Natalie...” Eli called, her voice trembling. “You... really did all that? For me?”

Natalie nodded again. “Of course, Eli. Even though you and David have broken up, our friendship won’t end. I know perfectly well that you’re not the cheap kind of girl they’re gossiping about. I’m the one who knows you, and they don’t. And I won’t let them talk about you any worse than this.”
