“From now on, I’m not going to believe everything you say so easily.” Eli spoke without hesitation.
“Why are you talking like that, Eli?” Natalie was deeply shocked by Eli’s words. “You don’t trust me anymore?”
“All this time, I considered you my best friend,” Eli said coldly, still looking at Natalie with a sharp gaze.
“You were the person who cared about me when everyone else distanced themselves from me. But it turns out you’re the cruelest of all. You’re the one who made people distance themselves from me, then came pretending to be my savior.”
Natalie stood frozen in place, her breath caught as she heard the words that struck her so directly.
“How can you act so sweet in front of me, smiling as if you’re defending me, while stabbing me in the back like this?” Eli’s voice grew increasingly firm, leaving an endless distance between them.
“And what do you mean by saying you were only telling them what you saw? Did you really see me hugging Josh? Did you really see us holding hands? How could you see something that I never even did? It was all your fabrication, your nonsense, Natalie!” Eli spoke loudly and bluntly.
Natalie fell silent.
“Explain what you mean.” Eli spoke again. This time, she felt she needed to know why Natalie had been willing to ruin her reputation.
“So what if I said those things, huh?!” Natalie retorted, no longer willing to back down.
“Why were you willing to do all of this to me? What did I ever do to you that you were willing to spread all those ridiculous rumors?” Eli’s voice echoed among the crowd of students who had begun gathering after seeing her speaking loudly to Natalie.
“Can you prove everything you’ve said about me?”
Natalie swallowed with difficulty, trying to put on a confused expression in front of her friends who were still standing nearby.
Her hands clenched tightly. She could not keep confronting Eli in a situation like this. Otherwise, everyone watching them might realize that Natalie was the one who started all of this.
