“Do you think I enjoy seeing the entire campus attack you?” Natalie sobbed even harder, looking at Eli with an expression of fabricated hurt.
“I was always by your side when everyone else left you, Eli. I defended you whenever people talked about you. But what are you saying now? Instead, you’re doubting my sincerity in front of everyone!”
“Save your fake tears, Natalie,” Eli retorted without moving even slightly from where she stood. She was not disturbed at all by the sobs that had once always managed to make her feel guilty.
“Don’t turn this around as if you’re the victim. I just want to know, what was your purpose in ruining my reputation in everyone’s eyes?”
“I never did that!” Natalie sobbed between gasps, trying to reach for Eli’s hand, only for it to be roughly brushed away.
“I was genuinely worried about you! If I didn’t care about you, why would I bother listening to everything people said about you? You haven’t forgotten, have you, how I always came to you and asked how you were doing when people didn’t even want to come near you?” Natalie still tried to convince Eli.
“What kind of concern is that? You spread ridiculous stories about your own friend all across campus,” Eli snapped sharply, staring straight into the eyes of the girl in front of her.
“You’ve really gone too far, Natalie. You don’t deserve to be called a friend. You’re a cruel person!”
Natalie gasped. Her sobs suddenly caught in her throat, and the mask of sadness she had put on instantly cracked under the force of those words.
“Now answer me, Natalie,” Eli demanded coldly, stepping closer until Natalie was forced to step back.
“If you’re really my friend, why did you tell people about something I never even did? You were the one who said you saw me doing all of that, when in reality, I never did.”
