The talk around campus about Eli and her relationship with David, which also involved Josh, was growing increasingly heated. Many people openly looked at Eli with hatred, sneering at her as if she were filth that needed to be gotten rid of immediately. And more often than not, they made things quite difficult for Eli.
Usually, the girl did not care too much about what was happening, but this time, it had gone beyond her limit.
Eli could not take it anymore. After her last class on campus, she immediately returned to the dormitory. Even the places she liked, such as the library and the singing practice room, were not spared from the gossipers.
“It’s really exhausting,” Eli complained as she placed her backpack on the study table. With reluctant steps, she then walked toward the bed and lay down. “Who started this gossip, anyway?”
She clicked her tongue in annoyance. Not long after, her phone rang loudly. Josh’s name appeared on the screen, and without realizing it, a small smile formed on her lips. Eli immediately sat on the edge of the bed, and as soon as she answered Josh’s call, the young man on the other end eagerly began talking about this and that.
Eli simply listened while occasionally commenting on everything Josh said. Until finally, Josh reminded Eli again about her promise to come home at the end of the week.
“I’ll come home at the end of this week, so don’t worry,” Eli said with a soft laugh.
The voice on the phone sounded loud. “That’s good, and I’ll pick you up. I’ll make sure you get home safely.”
Eli laughed awkwardly. “I know you’re busy with practice. I won’t bother you. Just do your job and attend all your practice sessions. I can go home by myself, Josh.” His voice could be heard letting out a long sigh.
“Why have you been talking so softly this whole time? Are you sick?” Josh asked suspiciously.
Eli shook her head even though she knew Josh could not see her. “No, I’m just tired. I have a lot of assignments. I’ll hang up for now. I promise I’ll come home at the end of the week.”
