His Regret Arrived Three Days Late novel Chapter 192

“This was part of my payment from Conrad,” Lydia continued, twisting the knife in Annika’s bleeding wound. “Of course, there was more…”

Annika clapped her hands over her ears and fled, unable to bear hearing another word. She didn’t have the courage to listen anymore.

The night was dark, and a cold rain began to fall as Annika wandered aimlessly down the silent street, her spirit shattered. The rain drenched her hair and clothes as she stumbled through the darkness, moving on autopilot.

Her phone kept buzzing, but she didn’t pick up.

...

Outside the Sargent Villa, a black Cayenne was parked by the curb. The man inside, just extinguishing a cigarette, caught a glimpse of a shadow in the sweep of the windshield wipers. He tossed the cigarette out the window and immediately got out, calling her name as he hurried toward her. “Annika.”

He had been waiting for a long time, calling her repeatedly with no answer. Just as he was about to give up, she had appeared.

Annika seemed not to hear him, continuing her mechanical shuffle forward. Sensing something was deeply wrong, he grabbed her arm.

She slowly turned her head, and Conrad’s worried face came into view. Her expression was vacant, and with a faint flicker of her eyelids, the weak streetlight cast a ghostly pallor on her face.

A knot of anxiety tightened in Conrad’s chest. “What’s wrong? What happened?” he asked urgently.

Annika’s dazed, unfocused eyes looked at him, then down at the large hand gripping her arm. She tried to pry it off, a flicker of irritation crossing her rain-streaked face when it wouldn’t budge.

“Let go,” she muttered through pale lips.

But seeing her in this state, there was no way Conrad would let go. He pulled her into his arms, lifted her off her feet, and carried her through the downpour to the black Cayenne.

He couldn’t bear this torment any longer. He wanted to be with her every minute of every day, never to be apart again.

It was unclear if Annika heard him, but she fell silent, the two of them holding each other, their faces pressed together.

Annika’s eyes fluttered open. She stared at him, her fingers tracing his jawline as her lips parted.

“Conrad… Conrad, actually…” She pulled open her shirt, a fleeting, ethereal smile on her face. “I have a body, too, you know.”

She grabbed his hand and pressed it fiercely against her chest.

His fingertips touched her skin, and his gaze followed. The sight of her, pale and flushed, her lips glistening, the shattered light in her eyes—it sent ripples through Conrad’s very soul.
