The drunken disarray from last night had vanished from Jarrod's handsome face. He was dressed in a sharp, immaculate suit, and his dark eyes had returned to their usual cold, unfathomable depths.

"You're awake?"

Seeing her open her eyes, he set his phone down and asked flatly.

Stella hadn't expected to sleep so heavily. She hadn't even noticed when he got out of bed.

She sat up, self-consciously adjusting her pajamas. "Yeah. Are you heading to the airport now?"

He gave a curt nod. "I had a bit too much to drink last night. Barney was worried I wouldn't have anyone to look after me, so he brought me here. If I caused you any trouble, I apologize."

Stella shook her head. "It's fine. It was no trouble."

Jarrod paused for a moment. "I saw the boxes you packed. You can keep living in this house. I'll have someone appraise it and transfer the equivalent funds to you, consider it a gift from me."

"There's no need. My new place is perfectly fine, and the commute is easy," she declined smoothly.

A dark shadow crossed Jarrod's eyes at her rejection, but he didn't push the issue. "Barney should be here. I'm leaving. I'll wrap things up as quickly as possible and get back."

With that, he stood up and walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he stopped and added, "If you need anything, call me. Even after the divorce, I won't just ignore you."

She nodded. "I know."

He shot her one last look before opening the door and stepping out.

As silence fell over the room, Stella slowly let out a breath.

She fell back against the mattress.
