Jarrod led her off the terrace. The entire time, he didn't spare Logan a single glance. He didn't even acknowledge his existence from the corner of his eye.

Stella let out a silent breath of relief.

Inside the lounge, Jarrod really had arranged for a pair of flat shoes to be delivered.

"Try them on. See if they fit," Jarrod instructed.

Stella glanced at his unreadable expression and decided to clarify things anyway. "I swear I didn't know Logan would be out there."

"I had no idea he and Skylar were attending this banquet either. I only agreed to come with you because..."

"Because what?" Jarrod asked casually.

"Because you asked me to, and I didn't want to upset you," she replied.

It wasn't entirely a lie. While part of her was fulfilling her duties as his wife before the divorce, she knew he wouldn't have forced her if she had declined.

But she had agreed, and subconsciously, it was because she didn't want to disappoint him.

Hearing this, a soft scoff escaped Jarrod's throat. "Are you just saying what I want to hear so I don't go after him?"

Stella froze. "No."

"I know you're not irrational, and you wouldn't take your anger out on innocent people."

She held his gaze, her expression completely earnest, without a hint of evasion.

Jarrod's lips tightened into a thin line. He didn't say another word. Instead, he crouched down and gently slipped the high heels off her feet.

Stella was stunned. She wanted to say she could do it herself, but Jarrod shot her a cool, warning glance before returning his focus to her feet.

The warmth of his fingers against her skin sent a flush to the tips of her ears. She stayed perfectly still.
