They hit a red light. Jarrod stepped on the brake, turning his head slightly to look at Stella, a low scoff escaping his lips. "In your eyes, am I really so cold-blooded that I wouldn't even show respect to an elderly woman?"

Stella shook her head, her tone earnest. "I've never thought that. I know you're a decent man with good manners. My grandmother was so happy that day, and I am genuinely grateful to you."

Looking into her clear almond eyes, Jarrod saw only total sincerity. He didn't push it.

The light turned green. Jarrod kept his hands casually on the wheel, eyes on the road, and asked in a seemingly offhand tone.

"Do you throw out apologies and thank-yous to that Logan guy you grew up with, too?"

Stella blinked, startled.

She hadn't expected Jarrod to randomly bring up Logan.

It was completely different from that night at the club when she had gone to pick up a drunk Logan, and Jarrod had gripped her wrist with blistering sarcasm and cold fury. Right now, Jarrod seemed entirely indifferent, as if he were just making idle conversation.

But Stella couldn't quite decipher the meaning behind his words.

After all, the last time she pissed Jarrod off at the club, the Quinn family suffered a major blow the very next day. News of Jarrod publicly taking Chloe out of the country resulted in a vicious slap from George.

Then came the divorce papers, and the Quinn business was forced to terminate their partnership with the Fullers.

"Is it that hard to answer?" Jarrod cast a calm, unbothered glance her way.

"No."

Stella weighed her words carefully before answering his previous question. "I wouldn't. But just like you and Julian, Logan and I have known each other since we were kids. There are a lot of things where we wouldn't bother apologizing or thanking each other, and neither of us would think twice about it."

Jarrod easily caught the underlying meaning in her words and noticed how carefully she had chosen them.

She had even used him and Julian as an analogy, deliberately downplaying her childhood bond with Logan.

Jarrod couldn't quite pinpoint why he had even brought Logan up in the first place.
