Chapter 81

(Daisy’s POV)

The door had opened and I had stopped breathing.

My lungs paused while my brain stalled.

Yes. It was that intense because there was only one person it could be and if I acknowledged it, then it meant-

“…DeLuca?” I said.

Silence.

“DeLuca?!” I called again… and then I moved past doubt and went into panic.

“What the hell are you doing?!”

I shot backward, pressing myself into the corner of the shower like I could merge with the wall if I tried hard enough. My arms crossed tightly over myself, gripping skin; body parts, virtue whatever was available.

“What.. what do you think you’re doing?” I continued, louder now as I realized I could. My eyes stayed locked on the curtain.

That curtain was now the only thing standing between me and lifelong trauma. Then…

“Relax.”

His voice came, steady.

But infuriating.

“Relax?” I repeated, my voice jumping several emotional stages in one go. “You walked into the bathroom while I’m in here and you’re telling me to relax?!”

I was trembling and I pressed further into the wall, like distance was still an option.

“Why are you here? What are you doing here?” I demanded, words tripping over each other. And then a thought sufficed…

A terrible, horrible, absolutely unacceptable thought.

“Oh no,” I said immediately. “No, no- don’t even think about it..”

There was a pause and then he responded with faint amusement in his voice. “I came for toothpaste,”

I blinked, confused. “…what?”

“I just need toothpaste.” He said again and my body loosened slightly.

Just slightly. Because that… made sense.

“Oh…”

But the panic didn’t leave. It just downgraded from “catastrophic” to “contained disaster.”

“But why didn’t you knock?” I said. “You came in and closed the door.” I pointed out how that was part of the problem. But instead

of addressing that, he said this.

“From your reaction,” he continued, “it seems you’ve never had anyone walk in on you before.”

I opened my mouth.

“You haven’t.”
