He Didn’t Kidnap Me. Not Exactly novel Chapter 82

Chapter 82

I knew it.

I could feel it. Like the tension had a physical presence.

I stepped out anyway because hunger was stronger than pride.

The kitchen light was on and he stood by the counter, already doing something- calm and composed, like he didn’t know what

imperfection was.

I paused at the entrance, just for a second, and then walked in ready.

“I need to cook,” I announced at once.

He didn’t look up.

“You don’t have to tell me.”

Rudeness expected.

I decided to ignore him as grabbed what I needed, moving strategically now, like proximity was something that required planning.

Everything was fine.

Everything was controlled.

Until my elbow hit a cup, and of course it was a cup full of liquid.

It tipped and time slowed as the liquid shifted. Then spilled- directly onto him.

I froze.

“…oh my goodness,” I said immediately.

He looked down at his shirt, then at me, expression unreadable in a way that was frightening.

“I didn’t mean to,” I added quickly. “I can explain. The cup-”

“The cup moved on its own?” he completed.

I hesitated, then “Yes…”

A beat

“It betrayed me.” I said and in my defense, I didn’t remember placing a cup there for my elbow to hit it.

He shook his head, then he reached for a towel, wiping the spill with slow, deliberate movements.

“Have you considered participating in the upcoming sports festival?” he asked as he moved. It was totally random..

“What?”

“It might improve your coordination.”

I stared at him.

“You just got drenched and that’s what you took from this?”

“It is a recurring pattern.”

“I am not clumsy!” I didn’t know why my voice went up.

“You spilled on me a cup of milk that looked very avoidable.”

“Fine. But that is an isolated incident and not one to use to judge me.”

“You ran into a door yesterday.” He said and I paused.

“That door moved.”

“I’m sure it did.”
