Chapter 87

If Winter hurts Chris, can you handle the consequences?”

Gavin looked at her calmly. “Mr. Xander will handle it himself.”

Inside the room, Winter shoved with everything she had. Chris had one leg in a cast, and his balance was off. He stumbled back several steps.

He caught himself with one hand on the bed rail at the foot of the bed, breathing hard as he looked at Winter standing across from him.

Her eyes were red from anger. He had kissed her until she could barely breathe, and now she was gulping air, chest heaving.

Winter raised her hand and rubbed at her lips again and again, like she had been touched by something

filthy.

Chris watched the gesture. His eyes narrowed, and his expression turned even colder.

“Tell me,he said, voice flat. “What exactly did I agree to?”

Winter stared at the divorce agreement on the floor, the pages crumpled into a ball. Humiliation and fury surged up her throat.

“Back in the valley, didn’t you say it yourself that no matter what I asked, you would agree?” Her voice shook with anger. “I was out of it, but I wasn’t frozen stupid. What do you take me for, someone you can mess with? Chris Xander, you’re the CEO of a huge corporation, and you’re really going to pull something

this shameless?”

Chris’s gaze stayed on her swollen, reddened lips. His tone didn’t change. “What were my exact words?”

Winter turned her head away. In the mirror across the room, she caught a glimpse of herself. Her cheeks were flushed, her eyes glossy with moisture, and her lips were slightly swollen and raised from his

kisses. The sight made her want to scream.

When she didn’t answer, Chris lifted his hand and undid one button on his hospital gown.

“I agreed on one condition,” he said.

He undid another button, as if trying to cool the heat in his body. His dark eyes never left her flushed face.

“As long as you stay awake,” he said slowly, each word deliberate. “But you passed out.”

The worst part was that when she headed for the door, she still couldn’t move faster than a man with a cast. Chris caught up to her and pinned her into the corner by the wall near the doorway.

“Stop thinking about divorce,he said, voice low and hard. “If I don’t agree to it, you’ll stay Mrs. Xander for the rest of your life. That’s not up for debate.”

His words stabbed right into her. Her eyes went even redder.

“Are you bipolar, Chris? Is that it?” she snapped. “You wanted a divorce from the beginning. Now you’re refusing no matter what, so what is this really about?”

Her breath came fast as she forced the words out. “From the very beginning, you were the one who wanted out. Now you’re refusing to sign? What is this? What do you want? As far as I know, the Xander Empire is entirely under your thumb now. There’s nothing left at Grandma’s that you need to get your hands on. So why won’t you just let me go?”

Chris’s eyes were dark, layered with something she couldn’t read. “When did I ever tell you I wanted a

divorce?”

Winter’s throat tightened. “You didn’t have to say it to my face. I saw what you kept in your study drawer. If you want to deny it, then explain the divorce agreement I found there. What else was that supposed to be?”
