The instant their lips met, Winter’s mind went completely blank. Her fever had only just broken, and her head was still spinning. Her body reacted half a beat too slow.
Chris took advantage of that half–second.
His palm locked around the back of her neck, leaving her no way to pull free. In his deep, dark eyes, desire spread into something heavier, more dangerous.
Like a storm that had been building for a long time, it finally broke.
He opened his mouth and bit her lower lip. In the split second when she sucked in a sharp breath from the pain, he forced his way in, prying her lips apart and taking control, his tongue pressing in and tangling with hers without mercy.
With his other hand, he crumpled the divorce agreement into a ball and threw it away in anger.
All he could think about was her. Out there in the freezing cold, she had been close to dying, yet she still couldn’t stop thinking about ending their marriage.
What did she take him for? Someone she could marry when she felt like it, and divorce the moment she got tired of him?
Not a chance.
The thought lit the rage he had been holding down for far too long, like it had been searching for an
outlet and still couldn’t find one.
And then she started fighting him even harder.
Her hands struck his chest and clawed at him, frantic and furious. The humiliation hit him full force. He
was her husband, yet he looked like nothing more than some stranger forcing himself on her.
Chris’s eyes went cold.
His burning fingers slid up from the back of her neck to the back of her head. He tightened his grip, his long, strong fingers threading into her hair and gripping hard. Then his kisses came down on her again, hot and relentless, swallowing her whole.
Suddenly, he caught her raised wrist.
The pen she was still clutching was aimed straight at him. The sharp tip hovered less than an inch from his eye.
Chris didn’t flinch. He stared at Winter with a dark, chilling gaze, and with his free hand, he reached out to wipe the glisten of the kiss from her reddened lips.
Winter jerked away. Chris pinched her chin and forced her face back toward him. “You want to kill me?”
Before she could answer, he continued, voice low and dangerous. “Do you have the guts?”

As the last word left his mouth, he tightened his grip on her wrist and yanked the pen tip even closer.
“Without Mr. Xander’s permission, no one goes in.”
Skyla’s voice turned sharp. “Move. He’s injured. I’m not leaving him alone with Winter. Did you forget what she did to Jacob back then?”
“Mrs. Xander won’t do that to Mr. Xander,” Gavin said, absolutely certain.
A cold laugh slipped from Skyla’s lips. “Gavin, are you moving or not?”
Gavin’s tone stayed distant. “I only take orders from Mr. Xander.”
