Game Over, Mr. CEO: Your Wife Is Done (Winter and Chris) novel Chapter 73

Winter’s entire body went rigid. The little color left in her face drained completely as she stared at the man across from her in utter disbelief.

Her ears were still ringing. Chris’s words seemed to blend into the noise, unreal, like something out of a

nightmare.

Jacob.

He killed Jacob.

“That’s impossible!” the man holding her froze for a split second, then exploded in fury. “Jacob died of a drug overdose! You think if you say that, I’ll just switch targets to you? You think that will give you a chance to save her?”

He tightened his grip on Winter with one hand and raised the knife toward Chris with the other. “Back up. All of you. Back up!”

The blade pressed closer to her throat, slicing a thin line across her skin. A bead of blood welled up.

Chris’s gaze sharpened instantly. He lifted a hand slightly, signaling Gavin and Zac not to make any sudden moves.

Her neck was streaked with blood, yet her skin looked drained of all color in the cold air. It was easy to imagine what she must have gone through after being dragged out here. She looked fragile, her physical strength clearly failing under the weight of fear and the biting cold.

Her injuries told the rest of the story. There was a gash on her forehead. The clear imprint of a slap marked her cheek. A thin cut lined her throat where the knife had pressed against her skin. The gravel had scraped her palms raw, leaving them bleeding.

Chris suddenly remembered something she once said to him. She had told him she was afraid of pain.

A dark, icy look flashed across his eyes.

“Didn’t you notice?” he said evenly. “That syringe wasn’t even fully injected. It was ninety–nine percent pure. No one can survive something that strong. And Jacob wasn’t a novice. Do you really think he would have pushed that into his own veins?”

Winter felt the hand gripping her arm stiffen.

For a brief moment, doubt crossed the man’s face. Then anger returned just as quickly.

“Even if that’s true, Jacob’s sister is the woman you love. How could you possibly kill him?”

Everyone at the birthday party that night had seen Jacob order his men to beat Winter. Chris hadn’t lifted

“Whether I love her or not doesn’t change the fact that she is my wife. If someone dares to humiliate me by hitting my wife, there are consequences. As a man, you should understand that.”

The man’s eyes flickered. The hand gripping the knife began to tremble under the surge of emotion.

Chris kept his eyes locked on the blade.

“Winter only exposed the club. I killed Jacob. I’m the one who destroyed your last hope. If Jacob had lived, you could have kept making money. Your girlfriend might still be alive.”

The man began muttering to himself.

“If Jacob hadn’t died, Elsa could have been treated. Whoever killed Jacob killed Elsa.”

His arm jerked up. The knife pointed straight at Chris.

“It was you.”
