He clenched his jaw so hard the muscles twitched. His voice broke as he choked out the words. “But Jacob is dead. There was no way I could make that kind of money in such a short time. Elsa didn’t want to drag me down. She slit her wrists.”
Winter felt her scalp go numb.
Her fingers found the lighter on the ground. She closed her hand tightly around it.
“I exposed that club because Jacob exploited countless underage boys and girls,” she said steadily. “I did it to save more people. As for his death, that was the result of his own actions. It has nothing to do
with me.”
“Nothing to do with you?” His face was now twisted with grief and rage, almost unrecognizable. “If you hadn’t exposed the club, it wouldn’t have been shut down. I wouldn’t have lost my only source of income. You say you did it to save others. All I know is that Jacob gave me a way out. He gave me money. He could have saved Elsa. You destroyed that path. You destroyed her only chance to live.”
Winter frowned.
She could hear it in his voice. He was no longer rational. He was trapped in grief and had no way out.
“I may not have known Elsa,” Winter said slowly, lowering her tone, “but from her photo, she looks like a kind girl. Do you really think she would have wanted you doing those things for Jacob?”
He grabbed at his own hair, laughing one second and crying the next, his words tumbling over each
other.
“Elsa was the kindest girl I ever met. We grew up together in the orphanage. I liked her since we were kids. I worked to pay for her school. She was so smart. She learned everything so quickly. But God wouldn’t spare her. She was diagnosed with a devastating illness.”
His voice cracked.
“She loved cake. Yes. Cake.”
He staggered toward the tombstone and knelt in front of the small sky–blue cake.
“She always liked lighting candles before eating cake. It didn’t matter if it was her birthday. She had to light candles first. The candles. Where is my lighter?”
Suddenly he dropped to the ground, frantically searching. Then his eyes locked onto Winter.
He lunged at her.
He pried open her clenched hand and found the lighter. At the same time, he saw the rope around her wrists had been burned through.
“Bitch!”

His hand struck her hard across the face.
Winter fell to the ground. Half her face went numb. Her ears rang, and stars danced across her vision.
unshaken.
His gaze remained fixed on Winter. Something complicated flickered in his eyes.
“Jacob’s promise to you in the hospital was the last hope you were clinging to,” Chris said evenly. “When
he died, that hope disappeared. That’s what pushed your girlfriend to take her own life.”
His eyes swept briefly over Winter’s pale face before returning to the man.
“You’ve got the wrong target for revenge.”
His voice dropped, cold and unyielding.
“Because I am the one who killed Jacob.”
