Chapter 64
Skyla’s expression shifted slightly. A sharp glint flashed in her eyes, gone almost as quickly as it appeared.
“Chris is injured. Don’t you care at all?”
Winter set her coffee cup down and sighed. “Skyla, why do you have to be so fake? If I don’t care about him, isn’t that better for you? Or is this some kind of habit of yours? Do you enjoy wanting men other women already love?”
The words hit their mark. For the first time, real irritation surfaced on Skyla’s face.
Back then, they had been close friends. Skyla had known all about Winter’s feelings for Chris. She had kept her secret and even offered advice on how to win him over.
They had stayed up late talking for hours. Winter had once lain with her head in Skyla’s lap while Skyla stroked her hair and said, “Winter, you’ll always be my best friend.”
Winter had planned to confess to Chris after finishing graduate school. Then the car accident happened, and she found out Skyla was already his girlfriend.
There had never been anything official, so she had no right to call it betrayal. But it left Winter feeling physically revolted.
None of that mattered anymore.
“You didn’t ask me out just to tell me he’s hurt,” Winter said.
Skyla hadn’t come for that. “I heard from Uncle Jimmy that you want to apply for the foreign correspondent position in Eveland.”
Now they were finally getting to the real point.
Winter had expected Skyla to ask Jimmy about her visit.
“You were there the night they welcomed Zac back,” Winter said calmly. “You saw how Chris handled the divorce papers.
“I don’t know why he still refuses to sign them, but I think you’re more anxious about it than I am.”
A faint smile curved her lips, and there was quiet confidence behind it. “After all, the gossip out there is not something a socialite like you can just ignore.”
She tilted her head slightly. “The only way those rumors about you will disappear is if I leave the country. Although I guess they’re not really rumors anymore. You’re the other woman. And you knew exactly what you were doing.
“As soon as I go abroad, the noise will die down. People will stop talking.
Winter followed the staff member to the elevator, surprised to find they were taking the executive lift.
She and the cameraman stepped out one after the other. It was her first time at the Xander headquarters, and she had no idea which floor Steve’s office was on.
After a few steps, her gaze landed on the gold letters on the door ahead: Office of the CEO.
She froze.
“Is this the Vice President’s office?” she asked.
The secretary hesitated, then smiled. “No. The person being interviewed today is not Mr. Steve Xander. It is our CEO, Mr. Chris Xander.”
