Chapter 60
No wonder she had noticed the bruise on Chris’s forehead right away. Looking closer now, there seemed to be other injuries on his face too.
Thinking back to William’s earlier half–joking remark, could it be that he really had fought Chris?
Before William could say anything, Gavin gave Winter a slight nod, confirming that what Skyla had said
was true.
Skyla didn’t even bother looking at William. “Winter, I know William was standing up for you. But Jacob is already dead. Can’t you just let it go? Do you honestly need his corpse to show up at your door and apologize before you’re satisfied?”
“Let’s not go there. He just died. I don’t feel like saying anything too harsh,” Winter replied coldly.
“You all keep saying William rammed Chris’s car. There were plenty of cars on that road. Why his? Why not someone else’s?”
She hated that kind of victim–blaming logic. As a reporter, she prided herself on staying fair and
objective.
But watching Skyla stand there, speaking for Chris like she had every right to, acting so self–righteous,
made her blood boil. 1
Winter’s gaze brushed over Chris’s cold eyes, and her voice dropped slightly. “If William did that, then there must have been a reason. That reason would be Chris.
“Our William is very well–behaved.” 1
What a line. Very well–behaved.
A smirk played on William’s lips. When Winter had first asked him whether he had rammed Chris’s car, there had been no trace of guilt or apology on his face. He had looked completely certain, as if he already
knew she wouldn’t blame him.
And she did exactly what he expected. Not only did she not scold him, she praised him instead.
To anyone watching, that kind of unspoken understanding between them was hard to watch.
Chris took off his glasses and folded them slowly, slipping them away. Something dark shifted in his eyes. “Winter, don’t forget. We’re not divorced yet.”
A sharp sting hit her chest. “Didn’t Dominic give it to you?”
William slipped an arm around her shoulders and looked down at her. He had noticed from the moment she saw Chris standing there that she had been forcing herself to stay composed. “Come on. Let’s go home and get some sleep.”
Winter stopped mid–step.
William reacted almost instantly. His expression darkened, and he let go of her shoulder. In the next second, he strode forward and threw a punch at Chris.
“Chris Xander, how dare you use that to threaten her. That’s her home.”
He moved so fast that no one else had time to react.
Except Chris.
The moment William’s fist came at him, Chris lifted his hand and caught it in midair. His fingers closed tightly around William’s knuckles, the pressure nearly crushing the bones in his hand.
“This is between my wife and me,” Chris said coldly. “If you interfere, I’ll break your hand.”
