Mrs. Xander Sr.’s expression darkened. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Winter pretending to rummage through her bag as if nothing was wrong. She walked over and took her hand.

Just as she suspected, Winter’s fingers were ice–cold.

Winter stiffened slightly the moment their hands touched. Mrs. Xander Sr. tightened her grip without saying a word.

Zac glanced at Chris, whose face showed no emotion at all. He frowned faintly. When he saw Mrs. Xander Sr. holding Winter’s hand, he instinctively stepped a little closer before finally turning his attention toward the elevator.

“Skyla, you’re hurt?”

Zac had attended Jacob’s funeral, so Skyla wasn’t surprised to see him here.

She lifted a hand to touch her forehead, but since she couldn’t see where the gauze was, her fingertip pressed directly against the wound. A faint stain of blood quickly seeped through the white bandage, making it look worse than it was.

Combined with her pale complexion, she looked fragile and pitiful.

She only frowned slightly and said lightly, “It’s nothing. Just a small cut.”

A small cut that warranted Chris personally bringing her to the hospital.

Mrs. Xander Sr.’s gaze grew even colder.

Skyla gestured for the caretaker to push her wheelchair forward.

Once closer, she spoke gently. “Grandma, I heard from Chris that you were here, so I came to check on you. We’ve had a funeral in the family these past couple of days, so it wasn’t convenient for me to visit you at home. Are you not feeling well? How are the test results?”

As she drew nearer, Mrs. Xander Sr.’s eyes naturally fell to Skyla’s legs.

It was a fact that Skyla had been paralyzed years ago while saving Chris’s life.

But the Xander family could never have accepted a woman who couldn’t walk into the family, much less as Chris’s wife. He was the heir to the Xander empire.

Back then, when Skyla’s father had subtly brought up the topic of marriage, Mrs. Xander Sr. had taken the responsibility onto herself. She rejected the proposal, even knowing she would be labeled ungrateful.

But no matter how you looked at it, the Xanders owed Skyla.

She hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “Fine. Let’s go.”

Skyla smiled faintly. “It’s been years since I’ve had a meal with you, Grandma.”

Just as Zac was about to press the elevator button, a pale hand reached past him and pressed it first.

The doors slid open. Chris held one hand against the door.

The caretaker pushed Skyla’s wheelchair inside first. Then Winter helped Mrs. Xander Sr. in.

Zac stepped forward to follow, but Chris released the door at the last second. It nearly closed on him.

Zac reacted instinctively, lifting a hand to stop it.

“Careful,” Chris said as he brushed past him and stepped into the elevator.
