Game Over, Mr. CEO: Your Wife Is Done (Winter and Chris) novel Chapter 50

Chapter 50

Mr. White hadn’t returned yet, so Winter waited outside the changing room.

Zac walked down the hallway holding a cup of something warm. He stopped in front of her and handed it over. “Hot milk. Did you have trouble sleeping? You look a little tired.”

“Thanks, Zac.” She took it with both hands, surprised by how observant he was.

She really hadn’t slept much last night.

Ever since she was attacked, her insomnia had only worsened. Jacob’s death had eased it slightly, but it hadn’t cured it.

Zac and Dominic were both Chris’s closest friends. They had grown up together and often went to the Xander estate. Compared to Dominic, who never stopped talking, she had spoken far less with Zac.

She didn’t quite know what to say to him, so she lowered her head and sipped the milk.

A moment later, his voice came gently from above her. “Are you fully recovered?”

She froze.

“I heard Jacob died the day I got back,” Zac explained. “Dominic told me he had someone beat you up. Were you badly hurt?”

Winter shook her head. “It wasn’t serious. I’m fine now.

Her hearing hadn’t fully recovered. Occasionally, there was still a faint ringing in her ears.

“That’s good.”

Just then, Zac’s phone rang.

He took it out, swiped the screen, and answered. “Chris.”

Winter’s fingers tightened slightly around the warm cup.

She lowered her eyes and kept drinking.

“Yes. Grandma is changing and getting ready for the ultrasound. I’m with her. You don’t need to come.”

She didn’t hear what Chris said on the other end, but Zac flicked a glance at Winter before humming a quick acknowledgment. “All right.”

He had just hung up when Mrs. Xander Sr. came out, dressed in loose clothing. She heard enough to understand and gave a small snort. “Tell him not to come. Just seeing him makes my chest feel tight.”

Zac glanced at Winter. She immediately understood.

“You sound strong enough if you still have the energy to yell at me,” Chris said calmly.

He took the test results from the doctor and glanced over them. Everything was normal. All the numbers were within range.

He handed the papers to Winter. “Hang on to these.”

Her gaze lingered for a brief second on his long, well–defined fingers. Something inside her chest fizzed like a shaken soda can, pressure building until it hurt.

She reached out and took the report.

“Grandma.”

At that moment, the elevator doors opened and a gentle voice floated over.

Winter slipped the papers into her bag without changing her expression. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Skyla sitting in a wheelchair.

A piece of gauze was taped to her forehead.

She looked injured.
