Chapter 488
William tossed the blood-soaked bandage into the trash and began tidying the tray.
In a deliberately casual tone, he said, “Next time, I’ll tie it into a fancy bow for you.”

In Chris’s ward, Mr. Simmons Sr. glared at him and raised his hand, feady to strike.
That child was still alive.
And Chris had hidden it from them for this long.
Chris had clearly expected this. He didn’t dodge or flinch. He simply sat there, ready to take the slap.
But Mr. Simmons Sr.’s hand never came down.
He looked at Chris sitting there with his back straight, completely still, and countless thoughts passed through his mind.
Everyone had been worried about Winter, whether the shock would be too much for her. Of course Mr. Simmons Sr. was worried too. She was Richie’s mother. She had carried him and given birth to him. Everyone’s heart ached for her.
But for more than a year, through every relapse, every crisis, every moment that required someone to be present and steady and ready for the worst, that person had been Chris.
He had carried all of that alone.
He had prepared for the worst, and no matter how things turned out, he had planned to bear it by himself. He had been carrying all of it, and no one had ever asked whether Chris was tired.
In the end, Mr. Simmons Sr.’s hand didn’t fall. Instead, he pressed it lightly against Chris’s uninjured shoulder.
He was just about to say something comforting when Chris said calmly, “If you’re going to hit me, then hit me. Don’t do this.”
This brat really didn’t deserve kindness.
“With that emotional intelligence of yours,” Mr. Simmons Sr. snapped, his anger flaring all over again, “you can forget about winning Winnie back!”
He turned and walked toward the door, clearly too angry to stay in the room any longer.
“Grandpa.”
Chris suddenly called out to him.
Mr. Simmons Sr. stopped.
Then Chris’s voice came from behind him again.
“Compared to what Winnie has suffered, what I’ve carried is nothing. You’re right. I deserve everything that’s happening now. But I don’t want to let her go.”
Mr. Simmons Sr.’s eyes reddened slightly.
Without turning back, he gave a cold snort and strode out of the ward.

Not long after Mr. Simmons Sr. left, Dominic left as well.

He quietly arranged for someone to investigate Winter’s parents, making sure that not a single word got out.
The weather in Liono City was warm today. The last of the cold air had finally moved out of the area.
After Chris’s men sent Jimmy back to the university, he arrived at the conference room just in time for his meeting.
Once the meeting ended, he taught two classes, then returned home as usual.
His house sat deep inside a gated community. Few people passed by on a normal day. The area was quiet, secluded, and undisturbed.
In the sunroom on the second floor, Jimmy held a woman in his arms.
She was beautiful, with delicate, refined features. She wore a pale blue nightgown, with a light shawl draped over
her shoulders.
