Chapter 483
Dominic was surprised Chris had actually managed to hold back.
For a second, he almost admired him. Chris really was Chris. His self-control was almost impressive.
“Is Richie asleep?”
The familiar voice suddenly came from beside him, and Dominic immediately rolled his eyes inwardly.
Forget it. He had overestimated him.
Chris curled the hand at his side into a fist. His gaze stayed fixed on Winter’s face, and his Adam’s apple moved slowly.
His voice was low, with the faintest trace of caution in it.
Dominic gave the people beside him a look and led them away first.
Winter gave a quiet hum.
She glanced at Chris’s clothes. Her lips had only just parted when the man across from her spoke first.
“I went out to take care of something. My injuries are fine.”
Dominic, who hadn’t gone far, rolled his eyes again.
Had she even asked?
Why was he so eager to explain?
Oh, Chris. So this day had finally come for him too.
If people outside knew that the ruthless business tycoon who ruled Liono City’s corporate world could act this desperate in front of the woman he loved, half of them would probably pass out from shock.
“I’ll walk you back so you can rest.”
Chris took the hand hanging at Winter’s side.
His palm was broad and warm, with a thin layer of calluses on his fingertips. Slowly, he wrapped her hand completely in his.
Winter didn’t pull away.
She didn’t say yes either.
She simply let Chris hold her hand and lead her toward the ward.
On the way back to her room, they had to pass Chris’s ward first.
Dominic and the others had just gone in, and the door was still open. Chris caught a glimpse of a familiar figure sitting on the sofa, flipping through his hospital chart, his brow furrowing one moment before he let out a quiet grunt the next.
The man’s hair was completely white, but his eyes were sharp and alert. He wore a dark jacket, with a security aide standing beside him.
A trace of helplessness flashed through Chris’s eyes. He stopped and asked into the room, “What are you doing

here?”
The old man paused in the middle of turning a page. Without lifting his head, he said, “The door was open. I thought I’d come in and sit for a while.”
Mr. Simmons Sr. had been waiting for Chris’s usual sharp comeback.
But instead, a soft, gentle woman’s voice came from the doorway.
“Grandpa.”
Mr. Simmons Sr. immediately turned toward the door and stood up.
The stern look on his face vanished in an instant, replaced by a warm, grandfatherly smile.
“Winnie.”
When he saw Winter’s pale face, his brows drew together slightly. Then his gaze moved down and landed on the hand Chris was holding.
A flicker of surprise and delight flashed in his eyes.
But he had lived long enough to see through the strange tension between the two of them at a glance.
One look was enough to tell him what was going on.
So what if Chris was good with a gun? So what if he had a soldier’s reflexes and a mind sharp as a blade?
He still couldn’t hold on to the woman he loved.
Useless.
Mr. Simmons Sr. couldn’t even be bothered to look at Chris. Leaning on his cane, he walked toward Winter.
He was Chris’s maternal grandfather, and Winter had grown up in the Xander household, calling him Grandpa just as Chris did. When she and Chris later married, the title only became more fitting.
