Chapter 474
“Don’t say that, Winnie.”
Chris suddenly gripped Winter’s hand.
He drew in a deep breath, forcing down the surge of emotion inside him. The effort made the veins in his neck stand out.
The scene from New Year’s Eve came back to him with painful clarity. They had released a sky lantern together. Back then, he had lost Mrs. Xander Sr., and Winter had been driven out of the Xander family.
“May we meet again, year after year.”
At the time, that had been the only wish he could give her.
His low, hoarse voice carried a stubborn certainty, wrapping around her like a thin, unbreakable thread.
“It will come true. You’ll stay by my side.”
Silence fell between them.
Outside the window, the soft drizzle grew heavier.
Even though their child was still alive, Chris knew Winter was not the kind of woman who could be kept by a child. That was why he had never tried to use Richie to make her stay.
He was the one who could not let go.
Winter turned to look at him. Her eyes were calm and lifeless, without the slightest trace of anger. Even her voice was steady.
“How could we possibly still be together?”
There was no confrontation. No hatred.
The way she spoke sounded less like an accusation and more like she was trying to convince him, and maybe herself too.
“If your parents and Grandma…”
“Grandma was poisoned,” Chris interrupted, tightening his grip on her hand.
He lowered his head briefly, then looked back at her.
Her mind went blank. For a moment, it was as if she couldn’t understand what Chris had just said.
Such a familiar name.
Such a familiar person.
She struggled free of Chris’s hand and tried to sit up. Chris immediately stood and helped her. Instinctively, he wanted to let her lean against him, but Winter’s body resisted and moved toward the headboard instead.
So he followed her wishes and let her lean back on her own.
Thinking of Mrs. Xander Sr., Winter could not hold back her tears.
So Mrs. Xander Sr. really had been poisoned.
Back then, Winter had been worried about Mrs. Xander Sr.’s health and had forced her to go to the hospital for a checkup, but the doctors had found nothing.
But no matter how hard she thought about it, she never could have imagined that the person who poisoned Mrs. Xander Sr. would be Chris’s aunt.
Why would Sasha hurt Mrs. Xander Sr.?
