Chapter 45
Skyla lay on the hospital bed.
Gavin’s words kept echoing in her mind.
“Mr. Xander and Mrs. Xander’s child.”
The sentence repeated itself over and over like a curse. Slowly, it seemed to sink into her thoughts, into her blood, and claw its way into her heart.
Her body could barely feel pain anymore, so why did her chest still hurt so badly?
She had gone to such lengths to poison Winter. That child had clearly lost his heartbeat and had been declared dead early. How could he still be alive?
And if he was alive, why had Winter suffered so much?
No.
Gavin had to be lying.
He had said it on purpose. He was trying to torture her.
Skyla had no idea how much time passed.
Doctors and nurses came in a few times to change her medication and check her condition. When they saw her lying there stiff and motionless, no one asked a single question. They simply went through the motions and left her there.
Night fell.
Still, no one came in to turn on the lights. Only the distant glow of the city spilled through the window, casting a dim outline around her body on the bed.
It was as if everyone had forgotten she existed, except when it was time to keep her alive.
At last, Skyla heard voices outside the door.
One of them was gentle, but firm.
It sounded so familiar.
Who was it?
A stiff smile crept across Skyla’s bloodless face. She slowly turned her head and stared at the door.
When it opened, she saw a slender, graceful figure standing there.
The woman was wearing a hospital gown. Her face was pale, and she still looked weak, but Skyla would have recognized that face anywhere.
No one had answered her earlier when she kept asking whether Winter was still alive. Deep down, she had already known the truth.
But seeing Winter standing right in front of her, alive and real, made Skyla want to drag herself up and tear her apart.
A trace of mockery appeared in Winter’s cold eyes.
“Chris protected me with his life. How could I die?”
The words stabbed straight into Skyla’s heart.
The man she had schemed so desperately to possess had been willing to risk his life for Winter.
Winter stood before her alive and intact.
And Skyla was the one left broken.
In front of Winter, she was nothing but a joke.
She had lost completely.
“Why do you always get everything?” Tears slid from the corners of Skyla’s eyes. “I could tell how much your parents loved you from the way you talked about them. Even the smallest memories sounded warm. And even after they died, Mrs. Xander Sr. took you in and loved you like family. From the time you were little, you had everything. But me?”
