Chapter 460
Thinking about how Richie had spent more than a year in this place since the day he was born, enduring treatment after treatment and all that physical pain, Winter felt her heart twist.
The way he had cried just now had probably happened countless times before.
And every time, she hadn’t been there.
A sharp ache spread through her chest, and her tears fell again.
“Mommy is so sorry. I didn’t protect you.”
Winter lowered her head and pressed her forehead gently to Richie’s, trying to hold back her sobs.
“Mommy. Do you know that? I’m your mommy.”
“Mama…”
A hoarse little voice suddenly came from her arms.
The sound was so small, yet it went straight through her and struck the deepest part of her heart.
Winter’s eyes trembled. Tears rolled down her face.
“Yes. It’s Mommy. Mommy is here. Mommy is here.”
She loosened her hold a little, then took the little boy’s hand and placed it against her chest, right over her heart.
That familiar rhythm.
It was as if he had felt it before.
The little boy’s round eyes looked up at Winter as he felt the faint vibration beneath his palm.
In his sweet voice, he called again, “Mama.”
“Yes.”
Winter hugged the little boy tightly and finally broke down. “Mommy is right here.”
Calling her Mommy had taken every bit of strength he had. Once he saw her smile, his little hand dropped quickly.
His eyelids began to flutter with exhaustion.
Looking at him asleep, Winter’s heart felt unbearably soft and unbearably sore.
She held him for a while longer before finally agreeing, after Chris patiently coaxed her, to lay him back in his small bed.
With Chris’s help, she carefully set Richie down.
Then she saw Chris place a shirt over Richie’s little stomach.
She recognized it.
It was Chris’s shirt.
When she looked up, she finally noticed the wall above Richie’s little bed.
More than ten photos were taped there.
Winter froze.
They were all photos of her.
