Chapter 459
The little boy had been crying, but once Winter held him, his tiny hands clutched tightly at her protective gown. Gradually, he rubbed his little face against her chest, letting out a few soft, pitiful sniffles.
Chris stopped mid-step.
A flicker of emotion moved through his eyes.
The doctors and nurses in the isolation room froze too.
When the door first opened, they hadn’t realized who Chris had brought in. The visor of the protective suit was clear, but none of them had met Winter before.
She had been trending online before, but the story had come and gone quickly. As medical staff, they hadn’t paid much attention to it.
It was only when she approached Richie, and Chris allowed her to reach for him, that they understood. Then she said, “I’m Mommy,” and every one of them was stunned.
After keeping the truth hidden for so long, they had assumed Chris wouldn’t tell her that Richie was alive right now. At the very least, they thought he would wait until after the bone marrow transplant, when they could be sure the child was stable.
Compared with a whole year, another month or two wouldn’t have seemed that long.
But Winter’s condition clearly wasn’t right. Something must have happened, something even Chris could no longer control. Winter had eyes only for Richie. She didn’t care how anyone around her reacted.
But her body was far too weak. After walking that short distance, she was already unsteady. The moment she stumbled back, an arm tightened around her waist. Chris’s hand steadied her firmly.
“Sit down first, okay?”
One hand supported her, while the other gently protected Richie’s head. Chris looked at her tear-streaked face, and the hand at her waist tightened slightly.
Winter pressed her trembling lips together as tears fell silently. She nodded and let Chris guide her to sit beside Richie’s little bed.
The medical staff quietly stepped aside.
Looking down at the child in her arms, Winter felt her whole heart ache. She wanted to hold him tighter, but she was afraid of hurting him or scaring him.
She didn’t know that Richie was trying hard to lift his head against her chest to look at her.
He was too weak.
He couldn’t.
That way, he could see her.
And she could see him.
Their eyes met.
Winter looked at the little boy in her arms. His eyes and brows looked so much like hers, while his nose and mouth looked just like Chris’s.
He was the baby she had lost and found again.
He was so small.
So fragile.
He was over a year old, but he looked barely six months.
There was an IV in his tiny hand. His little feet had several bruises too, with faint needle marks visible in the middle.
