Chapter 454
Skyla could barely catch her breath, but she still forced the question out.
“I asked you, who is the bone marrow for?”
For some reason, a terrible feeling settled over her.
Chris had put up with her again and again for so long, but she had never imagined it was because he needed her for a bone marrow transplant.
For him to tolerate her to this extent, the person who needed that transplant had to be extremely important to him.
Who was it?
Who could matter that much?
There were very few people left who mattered to him. His parents were gone. His grandmother was gone.
The only one left was...
And Skyla had never expected it to be someone so close to him needing a bone marrow transplant.
Her heart began pounding harder and harder. Just as her hands slammed against the bed in agitation, Gavin finally spoke.
“Mr. Xander’s child.”
Skyla had prepared for whatever answer Gavin might give.
But when she saw his lips move and heard those words, her ears rang. Her mind went completely blank.
“What did you say?”
Gavin looked at her with eyes as cold and emotionless as frost, then turned to leave.
“Gavin, stop right there!” Skyla screamed, her voice sharp and hoarse. “What did you just say? Explain yourself!”
Impossible.
It was impossible.
Winter and Chris’s child had died more than a year ago. On the day Winter lost the baby, Skyla had been drinking to celebrate.
How could that child still be alive?
Skyla screamed hysterically, but in the next second, all her strength drained away. Her body collapsed back onto the bed.
The doctors and nurses rushed into the room and gave her a sedative.
Chris lowered his gaze to Winter’s face. There was a trace of obsession in his eyes.
“Except for the two years I served in the military, she has been by my side since we were young. I have never imagined what life would be like without her.
“I don’t want her to leave.”
“But if you and Ms. Winter keep torturing each other like this, neither of you will ever be happy,” Mr. White said, his voice aching. “Ms. Winter loves you. You should know that better than anyone. But staying beside you means she has to endure even more pain. Can you really bear to make her suffer like that?”
A long silence followed.
At last, Chris said quietly, “Go outside. I want to be alone with her for a while.”
Mr. White sighed softly and left.
Even unconscious, Winter still had tears at the corners of her eyes.
Chris wiped them away with the pad of his thumb.
A faint, choked sound escaped her throat.
Even in sleep, she was still in unbearable pain.
