Chapter 452
The air in the hallway seemed to freeze in an instant.
Winter’s sudden appearance, and the hysterical question she had thrown at him, made Chris’s heart seize.
His expression darkened. He forced his unsteady breathing under control and strode toward her.
“It’s not what you think.”
William had rushed out after him too. He hadn’t expected Winter to be here, much less to overhear his conversation with Chris.
“You’re exhausted. That’s why your mind is running wild. Let’s go back to your room first.” He placed his hand on the armrest of her wheelchair.
Mr. White, who had been pushing the wheelchair behind her, had gone deathly pale. He looked down at Winter, his heart aching at the sight of her nearly falling apart.
“Ms. Winter.”
He was about to reach for her hands and pull them away from her hair, but Chris got there first. From the other side, he caught her hand and carefully pried open her stiff, trembling fingers.
“I already told you…”
Winter gripped the wheelchair armrests with both hands. Tears slid from her empty eyes. It was as if she couldn’t hear anything Chris was saying. She only kept asking the same question.
“Just answer me. Is it true?”
She lifted her eyes to Chris, who was right in front of her. Her tear–blurred gaze was filled with pain and despair.
Before the explosion that day, she had already sensed the answer deep down. That was why she had rushed toward Skyla at all costs, desperate for revenge.
But after the explosion, her body had seemed to fight with everything it had to keep that answer buried. For the past few days, she had been dazed and numb. She had forgotten so many things.
Now, after hearing William and Chris’s conversation, the answer had broken through its cage and driven itself hard into her mind and heart.
When she thought of what her child might have gone through, she struggled to speak.
“You’ve lied to me so many times. Are you still going to lie to ine now?”
She pulled her hand free and clutched the fabric over her chest.
It hurt too much.
That was the child she had almost been able to meet. The child she had carried through morning sickness and waited for with hope.
“To put it simply,” the doctor said, “Ms. Scott’s current state is a kind of self–protective response. Her heart is under too much strain. She cannot handle this level of shock, which is why she fainted.”
Chris sat beside the bed and looked down at Winter’s hand, still held tightly in his.
He raised it and kissed the back of her hand.
That answer was a pain she couldn’t bear.
His thumb happened to rest over the scar at the base of her hand.
The place where he had once shot her.
Beside the bed, General poked his head forward to look at the unconscious Winter, then rubbed his head against Chris’s knee.
Chris gently touched the dog’s head.
And William no longer needed to hear Chris admit the truth himself.
He already had his answer.
