Chapter 434
The hospital foom door was shoved open, and William’s and Dominic’s voices rang out Dominic drew in a sharp breath.
The fruit knife had already pierced Chris’s chest, Blood soaked through his hospital gown, spreading across the entire front of it
How much strength could Winter possibly have right now? Chris had clearly been the one holding her hand, forcing the knife into himself.
He was completely insane.
Mr. White froze in the doorway and stared blankly at the two people by the bed.
“Ms. Winter…”
Even Wendy, who had followed them in, was so stunned by the scene that she couldn’t move. Instinctively, she shifted behind the person beside her who looked the most reliable.
But before she could take another step, a shadow flashed in front of her.
Gavin had already strode forward.
“Wait,” Dominic said, stopping him.
“Look first. Who’s holding the knife? Do you really think you can take it from him?”
A sharp, grim look settled between Gavin’s brows.
Of course he had seen that Chris was the one holding the knife. His first instinct had been to rush forward and protect him, but
the moment Dominic spoke, he stopped.1
As long as Chris refused to let go, no one could take that knife from him.
Chris had clawed his way back from the brink and dragged himself to Winter on nothing but sheer will. He was already at the end of his strength, but the stubborn ruthlessness buried in his bones wouldn’t let him release her.
In this world, the only person who could save him was Winter.
Only Winter.
William stood where he was, motionless, his gaze complicated as he looked at the two people by the bed.
So many people had rushed into the room, but Chris acted as if he didn’t hear any of them. His eyes stayed fixed on Winter’s pale, rigid face, unblinking. His grip on her hand only kept tightening.
Winter’s fingers trembled as she tried to pull free, but even then, Chris wouldn’t let go.
“You think doing this will make me…”
“It won’t,” Chris said.
His lips moved slightly. As more blood left him, his face turned frighteningly pale. 1
A self-mocking smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“Of course you won’t forgive me. I never expected you to. I only did this to make you stay.”
Insane.
Completely insane.
Dominic felt his scalp prickle. Someflding this extreme would only prah Winter farther away.
“You’re wrong,” Winter said..
The metallic scent of blood was growing stronger, but her red-rimmed eyes held only sold determination.
“Even if you do this again, I still won’t stay.”
With a sharp clang, the fruit knife slipped to the floor.
Chris’s body finally gave out. His tall frame slid downward, and he dropped to one knee beside the bed. Even then, his hand still gripped Winter’s tightly.
Both of their hands were cold and stiff.
Only after he sank to his knees did Winter see the state of his back from where she sat on the bed.
His entire back was stained red. The deepest color spread from the center, dark and alarming, soaking through the fabric around
Judging from the blood that had already started to dry, he had been bleeding since the moment he entered the room.
Her fingers trembled.
Chris immediately held them even tighter.
He drew a strained breath and asked without looking back, “Gavin, are our people in place?”
Gavin nodded. “They’re in place. They’re waiting for your order.”
Dominic froze, not understanding what Chris intended to do.
A look of grim resolve settled over Chris’s pale face.
He looked at Winter and said, each word clear and deliberate, Lock down the hospital.”
He would never let her leave.
He had come just to see with his own eyes that she was all right, and to let her see that he was still alive.
But now, this was going to break the last bit of strength holding him together.
Dominic was so desperate he nearly dropped to his knees and begged Winter to say yes.
But in the next second, Winter collapsed.
“Winnie!”
William reacted fastest and rushed forward to catch her.
Her face had lost every trace of color. Her eyes were closed, and she had passed out.
Once she lost consciousness, the tension in her body finally loosened. Her bitten lip relaxed, revealing how badly she had been holding herself together.
Wendy began to cry as she pulled out a wet wipe and gently cleaned Winter’s mouth. Her heart ached so much that she didn’t know what to say.
She had always known how deeply Winter loved Chris.
If Chris hurt himself and the pain he felt was ten out of ten, Winter would feel it at eleven.
The medical staff rushed into the room.
Chris had already lost consciousness, but his hands were still locked around Winter’s and wouldn’t let go, just like when they had been brought in during the night.
Before, Gavin’s promise that he would guard Winter for him had worked.
This time, it did not.
The doctors had no choice but to send them into the emergency room together.
It was something they had never done before.
Today, they made an exception for Chris.
Once they were inside, the medical team quickly connected both of them to monitors.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Their heartbeats were in the same rhythm.
