Chapter 428
Winter struggled to wake from the dream.
But the harder she fought, the more it felt like an invisible net was tightening around her, squeezing the air from her lungs.
Why could she hear car horns?
The noise grew louder and louder.
“Please, hurry! Go faster. I’ll pay you extra!”
Her own frantic voice rang in her ears. Her heart was pounding out of control.
Where was she going?
Why was she so desperate to get there?
A rush of panic hit her, and her eyes flew open.
The spinning scene in front of her slowly came into focus.
She was inside an upscale restaurant.
Soft piano music flowed through the room. It looked like someone had reserved the entire place. There were no other guests, and even the servers were nowhere to be seen.
Winter pressed a hand to her chest. She couldn’t understand why she was breathing so hard, as if she had run all the way here.
“I thought you were leaving the country for vacation.’
A familiar, low voice reached her ears.
Winter turned toward it.
Chris was sitting at a candlelit table. The flickering light sharpened the lines of his already handsome face, making his features look even deeper and more striking. His eyes were usually cool and distant, but tonight, there was something dangerously mesmerizing about him.
He looked almost unreal.
The moment Winter saw him, the tightness in her chest grew worse. Her heart felt like it was about to burst out of her ribs.
She looked down.
In her hand was a boarding pass.
The destination printed on it was Frangelia.
And the date was from five years ago.
Back then, she had just finished a research project and had planned to travel abroad to clear her head.
She remembered that much.
But her memories of those two weeks overseas were blurry. She had gotten into an accident abroad and hit her head in the end, Chris had flown overseas himself to bring her home.
But the impulse in her chest had already torn through the last of her reason.
When she saw the news saying he was on a blind date with some heiress, she had felt like she was going insane. Skyla had told her to take it slow, but Winter couldn’t wait anymore.
Traffic had been backed up, so she had run all the way here just to see him.
“My last name is Scott. Yours is Xander. We’re not related, so why should I treat you like family?”
“Aren’t you supposed to be impossible to fool? Don’t you notice everything? I’ve liked you so much for so long. How could you not see it?”
She rushed up to him and looked up at his suddenly cold face. The chill in his eyes only made her feel more wronged.
“What? Are you going to scold me?”
Tears filled her eyes, but she stubbornly lifted her chin.
“Go ahead, then. Do you think I’m afraid of you? I like you anyway. I’ve liked you since I was little. I like you so much I don’t even know what to do with myself. I don’t care what our relationship is supposed to be. I just like you!”
“Winter.”
He said her name in a voice so low it sounded like a taut string snapping.
When she realized he was trying to stop her, her eyes grew even redder.
“If you dare scold me, I’ll hold a press conference and confess to you in front of the whole world. I’ll make sure everyone knows I like you. Then we’ll see who still dares to compete with me!”
