Game Over, Mr. CEO: Your Wife Is Done (Winter and Chris) novel Chapter 424

Chapter 425

Before Skyla collapsed, her hand was still locked around Winter’s arm. Her nails dug in so hard it felt as if she meant to tear through Winter’s skin.

Even after the bullet hit her and she fell, she still didn’t let go.

Skyla’s weight dragged Winter backward. Winter’s legs had gone weak, and she couldn’t hold herself up. She started to fall with her.

Before she hit the ground, a dark figure rushed toward her.

Winter was pulled up and held tightly against a hard, ice-cold chest. Back in the woods, Chris had given her his jacket, and the clothes he had left on were soaked through and freezing.

Chris kicked Skyla away.

The bodyguards immediately stepped forward to check on her and confirm that she was dead.

Chris kept the hand holding the gun behind Winter’s head, blocking her from turning back to look.

“I need to ask her.” Winter’s eyes were red. “I need to ask her what she meant.”

A chill seemed to crawl out from deep inside her bones, making her tremble uncontrollably.

The baby.

Skyla had drugged her.

But why had Winter survived while the baby died?

Was it because the baby had still been too small?

No.

That wasn’t what Skyla had meant.

What had she been about to say?

The baby had died in place of...

In place of what?

Winter’s head throbbed as if it were splitting open, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t remember the missing words.

“No.” Winter grabbed at his arm. “Let me ask her. I need to know what happened. Chris, let go of me. Let go!

“Why didn’t you let her finish? You’re hiding something from me, aren’t you?”

She had lost all reason. She had completely forgotten that, only moments ago, she had been on the edge of death. Skyla’s words kept echoing in her mind like a curse, over and over, tormenting her until the pain became almost unbearable.

It hurt so much she wanted to tear the feeling out of her chest.

“Winnie!”

Chris stared at her empty eyes.

She looked exactly the way she had more than a year ago, after the induced labor.

A wave of fear slammed into him, so hard his heart seemed to stop. His arms went rigid as he held her tighter.

He cupped the back of her head and pressed her face into the curve of his shoulder. Then, as if no one else existed, he lowered his head and kissed her forehead.

“Listen to me,” he said. “I shot her to keep you safe. Don’t think about what she said.”
