Chapter 337
That was when Chris had lost his sight. It had been almost five years ago.
Their three-year marriage had passed quickly.
But when Winter thought back to that time, it felt like it belonged to another lifetime.
That day, she had made him a cup of tea and sat on the couch in his room, flipping through a magazine. It was one he had read before the accident. He used to read everything, from all kinds of subjects, and he remembered almost everything he read.
It was a travel magazine.
She flipped through it absentmindedly until her eyes stopped on one page. It described a remote place with a lake so clear it looked like a mirror. The whole place seemed unreal, almost like something out of a dream.
What caught her attention was the shape of the lake.
It was crescent-shaped.
The more she looked, the more captivated she became. She hugged the magazine to her chest and closed her eyes, imagining herself standing there, looking out over that crescent-shaped lake.
“Wow,” she breathed. “It’s so beautiful!”
Chris took a sip of tea without even turning his head. “If you’re going to read, then read. Why are you making such a fuss?”
She shifted onto her knees on the couch and scooted closer, holding the magazine up toward him. “Look! Just look at how-”
She stopped mid-sentence.
It had been two weeks since the car accident that took his sight, and she still could not accept it. She still couldn’t believe that those sharp, piercing eyes could no longer see.
He paused, teacup in hand. “What is it?”
She told him the name of the country and said, “The lake is crescent-shaped. It’s really unique and really beautiful.”
As she spoke, her fingers brushed over the photo on the page. Then Chris’s hand reached over. His fingers were still warm from the teacup as they lightly touched the back of her/hand.
She froze and pulled her hand away at once.
Chris had pulled her into his arms.
The sand irritated her eyes, and tears welled up, blurring her vision. Through the blur, she saw his face close to hers.
Then she felt a soft breath pass over her eyes.
She blinked, and the discomfort was gone.
When she opened her eyes again, Chris was already leading her into the cockpit.
As if he was afraid she might run, he kept her close when he started the engine. One hand controlled the boat, while the other held firmly onto her wrist.
The scene felt familiar.
It reminded her of the time she had been taken out to sea, and he had saved her. He had controlled the boat the same way back then.
“Do you want to try?” Chris asked.
