Skyla let out a cold snort, then said to the caregiver, “I’m cold. Take me inside.”
Out in the courtyard, Victor watched Skyla being wheeled away, his gaze turning cold and sinister.
After Bart died, he should have gotten rid of that bastard child too.
Inside the house, two thoughts kept repeating in Skyla’s mind over and over: “Chris is with Winter. Chris has already abandoned you.”
Twelve hours earlier, as the helicopter descended, Winter finally got a clear look at the entire island.
It was breathtaking, almost unreal.
For a brief moment, she was dazed by its beauty, but underneath that was a strange sense of familiarity.
She told herself it was only because it reminded her of the abandoned island they had been to before.
And the second she thought of that island, she thought of the photo in the drawer. Chris, standing beside another woman.
She threw off the blanket. “So this is the place you wanted to bring me?”
Her voice turned sharp with mockery. “You really do have a thing for islands.
Chris rose and looked at her profile as she stared outside. His eyes were dark and unreadable.
He pressed his lips together. After she had fallen asleep, he had deliberately ordered the pilot to slow the helicopter down. That was why they were only arriving now.
He flexed the arm that had gone numb after holding her all night. The instant she reached for the cabin door, he caught her by the arm and pulled her back against him.
“The helicopter hasn’t fully settled yet,” he said. “With how small you are, do you have any idea how far you’d go if you fell?”
As soon as the words left his mouth, the helicopter rocked once or twice before finally settling.
Winter realized she really had done something dangerous just now, but she only blinked and kept her face completely calm.
Nothing about it looked temporary. Not the house, not the grounds, not even the landscaping. This place had clearly existed for years.
But no matter how fast she walked, she was no match for Chris’s long stride.
He caught up in a few steps, pulled her back into his arms, and looked down at her with dark, intent eyes. There was a note of urgency in his voice, though he tried to hide it.
“You mean that abandoned island?”
The way he said it made it sound as if he had been stuck on her earlier comment the entire time.
“Why are you so hung up on one sarcastic comment?” she shot back. “Do you pick apart everything I say, trying to find some hidden meaning?”
Then she met his gaze head–on. “But for once, you got it right. Yes. That’s exactly the island I meant.”
Her gaze stayed on his. “But don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not hung up on your past. There’s just one question I really want answered.”
