Even now, she still remembered exactly how she had felt that day.
Winter suddenly yanked her hand back, threw off the covers, and got out of bed.
Barefoot, she stepped onto the floor. Her feet made sharp slapping sounds against the hardwood as she walked to the door. She grabbed the handle and pushed it down, but it wouldn’t move.
She immediately realized someone was outside.
At Blackwood Manor, there was one person who could understand Chris with nothing more than a glance and work with him perfectly, like a partner who had fought beside him for years.
It was Gavin.
And just as she turned to look at the window, Chris appeared beside her before she even realized he had moved. One hand pressed against her back. He bent down, slid his other arm under her knees, lifted her up, and carried her back to the bed.
He braced both hands beside her and leaned over her, his forehead almost touching hers. He had seen right through what she was thinking.
“You want to jump out the window? Then you’d better break your legs while you’re at it. That way you won’t be able to go anywhere. You can stay here forever.”
Winter turned her face away to avoid his breath and said coldly, “Then go ahead. Seal up all the windows and lock me in here like a prisoner.”
The floors at Blackwood Manor were much higher than those in an ordinary house. Jumping out the window really would mean broken bones.
But she would rather end up hurt than stay in this place.
Winter suddenly drove her forehead into Chris. The impact left her forehead red. The moment he frowned, she bent her knee and slammed it toward him. But Chris easily dodged the attack and pulled the blanket over her
instead.
Standing by the bed, he took off his jacket.
“The holiday break ends tomorrow,” he said. “Didn’t you say work on your parents‘ gravesite was supposed to start soon?”
Winter looked at him with red–rimmed eyes. Her nose stung, and a rush of bitterness burned behind her eyes. She forced it back and clenched her fingers tight.
His threat from New Year’s Day at her house in Westbay echoed in her ears.
“They’ve been resting there peacefully all these years. If you behave, they can stay there. But if you dare leave Liono City, I’ll dig them up and scatter their ashes.”
He was reminding her to behave.

Then she heard the bathroom door open.
She instantly put the phone back where it had been, lay down on her side, and pulled the blanket up over her head.
Chris loosely tied the sash of his black robe and walked over to the bed. He looked down at her hiding under the blanket.
Then his eyes casually swept to the phone on the nightstand, now slightly out of place.
He hooked a finger under the edge of the blanket and looked at her smooth hair. His cool, calm voice fell into her
ears.
“I’ll let you out in two weeks.
