The market was so loud that Winter had to cover one ear and raise her voice into the phone. “I’m at the market with the police, seeing if we can find any other leads.”
William answered right away. “Then I’ll come find you. Maybe I can help.”
The moment he said he was coming, Winter quickly tried to stop him. “Don’t. What if the paparazzi catch us together again? I’m married. Aren’t you afraid your antis will tear you apart for being seen with me?”
And years ago, that had almost happened.
William had entered the entertainment industry at eighteen and become famous fast. He had a massive fan base early on.
When he was nineteen, he and Winter had gone out to dinner one night. It was her first time drinking, and she had no sense of her limit. She got drunk, and he ended up half–carrying, half–holding her to the car.
A paparazzo caught it.
That same night, the photos hit the news. Rumors about William’s love life exploded online, and his fans went after the mystery woman so viciously that the whole internet seemed to erupt.
When Winter woke up and found out, she was so upset she nearly cried.
Seeing her on the verge of tears, William knew she hadn’t even confessed her feelings to Chris yet and was terrified Chris might misunderstand. So he said, “Why are you crying? Fine. I’ll just tell everyone I’m into men.”
He posted a photo of himself with a pretty, soft–featured young man tucked against his chest and captioned it, The person I like is a man.”
In the video of him helping Winter into the car, her face was never clearly visible. She was also wearing loose clothes, so all anyone could really make out was a petite figure. No one suspected it was not the same person.
The news that award–winning actor William Zeller had come out completely broke the internet.
That was when his whole “alpha” image really took off online.
Winter had pressed him about it afterward. “You like men? Since when? Don’t tell me you were secretly in love with me and decided to fake being gay just to help me out.”
William had laughed and shot back, “Wow. You really are full of yourself, aren’t you?” Then he hung up.
Later, though, he brought Winter to meet that quiet young man. She even saw him kiss the guy on the cheek herself. If it had all been fake, then knowing William, there was no way he would have gone that far.
It was just that two years ago, William told her they had broken up.
Now, over the phone, he said, “I’ll be covered up. No one’s going to recognize me. Just wait for me.
The market was packed, just as crowded and noisy as it had been the day Mrs. Young came there.
Winter stayed close to the police as they kept looking for clues. Since she wasn’t there to cover the story, she hadn’t brought any of her coworkers.

Winter was too focused on helping the police look for clues to notice that not far behind her, a woman in a black bucket hat and black face mask was trailing her at a steady distance.
“Winnie, look out!”
She heard a familiar voice first.
Then, before she could even react, someone grabbed her and pulled her tightly into their arms.
The person shielding her let out a low, muffled groan.
Winter froze. Shock gave way to confusion.
Then her hand touched something warm and wet.
Blood.
The color drained from her face.
“William…”
