As soon as she got home, Winter dropped her bag and went straight to the bathroom. She took out one of the pregnancy tests and followed the instructions carefully.

Then she set it flat on the bathroom counter and waited.

Her heart was pounding so hard it made her fingers curl tight. She had to force herself to stay calm.

Five minutes felt like forever.

One line.

All at once, the tension left her hand, and she let out a slow breath.

But deep down, her chest still felt tight, as if something were quietly pressing in on her from the inside.

Worried there might be some mistake, she waited a few more minutes.

The result didn’t change.

She used a second test.

Still one line.

She stared at the tests for a long moment. It looked like she had overthought the whole thing. She wasn’t pregnant.

Her phone started chiming with one message after another. Every one of them was from Steve.

She didn’t even look at them. She blocked his number right away.

Not long after Winter left Blackwood Manor, a black Bentley pulled out through the gates and headed for the hospital.

As soon as they arrived, Chris pushed open the door and got out before Gavin even had a chance.

Another car had arrived just a minute earlier.

Skyla sat in her wheelchair and looked up as Chris walked toward her. Warmth spread through her chest.

Because of the New Year holiday, he had been spending more time at home, so he was dressed more casually than usual. His hair wasn’t styled as precisely as it normally was either, Even so, his presence was still impossible to ignore.

Her heart started beating faster.

With a small smile, she said, “Chris, I thought you forgot I had my follow–up appointment today.”

Chris didn’t really care about her. He only cared about her blood.

the airport to the hospital for tests. At the time, she had thought he was worried about her health.

But ever since then, it seemed like he only paid close attention when it had something to do with her blood.

Was there something special about it?

Inside the doctor’s office, the doctor pulled up Skyla’s lab results on the computer and said, clearly pleased, “Ms. Jasper’s numbers are coming up. She is just a little below where we need her now.

“Mr. Xander, at this rate, and with the current treatment plan, another two weeks should do it. Once her levels are where they need to be, we can move forward with the bone marrow transplant.”

Chris looked at the screen the doctor had turned toward him. A faint flicker of light passed through his eyes.

It disappeared almost at once, buried again beneath his calm, unreadable expression.

“Until Skyla’s levels reach the target, keep searching the donor registry,” he said.

“Yes, sir. New donor information is added every day, so we’ll keep checking.” Then the doctor hesitated before adding carefully, “If we had known Ms. Jasper’s levels would not meet the requirement, it might have been better if your wife had gotten pregnant again…”

“That’s not happening,” Chris cut in. His expression revealed nothing.
