It was the same scent as the ointment she had used before at Blackwood Manor and at the Xander estate.
She knew she hadn’t put any on herself. She had slept in Chris’s bed the night before, so it wasn’t hard to figure out who had applied it for her.
Steve didn’t wait for an answer. He reached out and touched her knee.
The second his hand brushed it, Winter snapped back to herself and kicked him hard in the chest.
“Keep your hands off me.”
Steve had clearly not expected her to move that fast. The kick knocked him back into the chair, and he dropped into it with a sharp hiss. He shoved himself up, his face twisting with anger. “You kicked me?”
Then he suddenly planted both hands on the back of her chair and leaned over her, his broad frame trapping her in place. His cologne hit her all at once, sharp and overpowering.
Steve lowered his face like he was about to kiss her.
Winter turned her head away. “You’d better pray you still want that mouth of yours. I won’t mind cutting it off and feeding it to the dogs.”
Steve’s eyes dropped to the line of her neck, and then he froze. Near her collarbone was a clear mark.
“You slept with Chris at Blackwood Manor?” His eyes turned cold instantly.
Winter grabbed at her collar. The mark was from the night before, when Chris had come back reeking of alcohol and kissed her like he had lost his mind.
It hadn’t gone as far as sex.
But there was no way she was going to explain any of that to Steve. She shoved him away, got to her feet, and headed for the door.
“Winnie!” Steve rushed after her and grabbed her wrist.
She yanked free.
He stepped in front of her again, and she kicked him in the knee.
Pain twisted his face. “Answer me. Did you sleep with Chris or not?”
“Whether I did or didn’t is none of your damn business.”
“How is it not?” Steve snapped. “You were meant to be mine. How could you sleep with him?”
Steve was completely out of his mind. Winter drove the pointed toe of her heel into his knee again.
She was wearing heels, and the pain drained the color from his face.
Winter’s voice went cold. “Did that knock some sense into you?”
Steve ground his teeth together. “And what about you? Are you out of your mind too? Don’t forget your father got Chris’s parents killed How can you still be with him?”
Winter’s face went white Her eyes went still
The second Steve saw her expression change, he realized he had gone too far.
“Winnie…”

Her voice cut him off, cold and sharp, each word clear.
“How do you know?”
All these years, Chris had never mentioned it. Even Mrs. Xander Sr. had only just found out. So how did Steve know?
The second Winter calmed down after leaving the restaurant, that question hit her.
“Steve, how exactly do you know about that?
“Was it you who told Grandma?” she pressed.
Steve’s face turned completely cold. He stood there gripping his car keys. “You called me back just to ask me that?”
“What else would I be calling for?” Winter said mercilessly, “No matter what happens between Chris and me, I will never like you. I’m asking you one last time. How do you know about that?”
“You really don’t think much of me.” His expression darkened. “If Chris could find out, why couldn’t l?
“You’ll never like me?” He let out a cold laugh. “Just wait, Winnie. Grandina is gone now. No one can stop me anymore. I’ll take you back from Chris, and one day you’ll come to my bed willingly.”
Winter ended the call without another word
A while later, the cab pulled up outside her apartment complex.
She paid the driver, got out, and went into the 24–hour pharmacy next door.
Just to be safe, she bought three pregnancy tests.
