Game Over, Mr. CEO: Your Wife Is Done (Winter and Chris) novel Chapter 230

The next morning, just after dawn, Winter’s phone buzzed once, and Chris opened his eyes.

He looked down at her in his arms. At some point after she fell asleep, he had pulled her close. She had slept soundly through the night, barely moving at all.

He pushed back the covers, got out of bed, and didn’t answer the call until he had stepped outside the room.

On the other end, William’s voice came through, rushed and anxious. “Winnie, something came up with my family yesterday, and I had to deal with it…”

“She’s still asleep,” Chris cut in flatly.

The line went silent for a few seconds. Then William blew up. “Chris Xander, what the hell is wrong with you? Weren’t you the one who threw her out of the Xander family?”

Chris’s voice stayed cool. “I never threw her out of the Xander family.”

William ground his teeth. The day Mrs. Xander Sr. died, Chris had refused to let Winter into the estate. “So now you’re playing word games with me?”

“Once you say something like that, you can’t just take it back. If you won’t even admit she’s your wife, then let her go.”

Chris stood in front of the glass doors leading out to the balcony. Frost had gathered along the edges of the glass.

The cold in his eyes looked just as sharp. “You’ve got enough problems of your own, and you still have time to worry about her? Don’t you think you’re getting a little too involved for just a friend?”

There was a dangerous edge to the last few words.

William let out a mocking laugh. “Jealous? Let me tell you something. If the two of us fell into the water at the same time, she’d save me first.”

Then the line went dead.

William nearly choked on his anger.

Chris put the phone down and turned back toward the bedroom.

But when he pushed the door open, Winter was already awake.

She had just sat up, and when she heard the door open, she looked up instinctively. Her eyes were still hazy with sleep, and in that soft, drowsy state, she looked like a confused little fox.

Chris paused with one hand still on the door.

Why do you have my phone?” Winter’s eyes dropped to his hand. She threw back the covers, slipped out of bed, and hurried over in her slippers. “Did William call me?”

His breathing was uneven as he stared down at her. Her hair was tousled, her cheeks were flushed, and she looked both wronged and ready to bite him.

His expression darkened. He let her go, picked up his phone, and walked out of the room.

On the other end, Gavin said, “Mr. Xander, I didn’t manage to kill Fabian, but I did hit him. I pointed him toward his enemies at the border, so he won’t be making any moves for a while.”

The night before, as soon as Chris got back, Gavin had left for the border.

Chris hadn’t trusted anyone else with it.

As he listened to Winter talking to William through the half–open door behind him, a chill settled over his face.” What else?”

Gavin continued, “We traced the virtual account used to hire the killers who went after Mrs. Xander. But something about it doesn’t add up.‘

Chris bit down on his cigarette, flicked his lighter, and narrowed his eyes. “What?”
