Chapter 229
Earlier that night, Skyla’s car and Chris’s were both heading toward the restaurant. But when they reached a fork in the road, her car stayed on the planned route while Chris’s turned right instead.
She called him immediately. “Chris, your driver took the wrong turn.”
He gave a cool hum. “There’s a car following me. Liono City hasn’t been safe lately. Go home.”
Then he hung up.
Skyla turned to look back at once. Sure enough, another car was tailing Chris’s, heading off in the other direction.
Both cars were moving fast. Within seconds, they were gone.
Dinner never happened, so Skyla had no choice but to go back to Westbury first. What she hadn’t expected was that after shaking the car behind him, Chris had gone to the garden restaurant with Winter.
After hanging up on Steve in a fury, Skyla got someone to give her the garden restaurant manager’s number.
As soon as he answered, she said, “This is Skyla Jasper. Did Mr. Xander have dinner at your restaurant tonight?”
“Yes, Ms. Jasper. Mr. Xander came with Mrs. Xander,” the manager said.
Skyla’s fingers clenched around the phone. Her voice turned sharp. “She is not Mrs. Xander.”
Chris had publicly refused to acknowledge Winter in front of the guests who came to pay their respects that day. What made her Mrs. Xander?
The manager hesitated. Someone had already warned him that Skyla was Chris’s ex–girlfriend and a daughter of the Jasper family, which meant she wasn’t someone he could afford to offend either.
“Ms. Jasper, is there anything I can help you with?”
Skyla asked, “When did Mr. Xander make the reservation?”
Had he planned all along to take Winter there for dinner?
But the manager told her, “I believe it was a last–minute decision. Our restaurant has been fully booked from yesterday through January sixth. Mr. Xander compensated every guest who had a dinner reservation tonight and reserved the entire restaurant.‘
He couldn’t see Skyla’s expression growing darker and darker on the other end of the line.
“Compensated?” she asked coldly.
The manager went on to explain everything the guests had received that night.
Skyla did the math in her head. Just to have one dinner with Winter, Chris had spent several million without blinking
Chris had always been lavish with money, so that alone wasn’t what got to her.
What she couldn’t understand was why he had taken Winter to the garden restaurant.

After the manager finished, there was a long silence on the line. He called out to her twice before he suddenly heard a loud crash, followed by the dead beep of a disconnected call.
Skyla narrowed her eyes, and a sharp glint flashed through them.
Chris had taken Winter back to Blackwood Manor to protect her.
Those hitmen had to have been taken by Chris’s people.
The border account was secure. She was confident no one would be able to trace it back to her.
Still, she couldn’t use it again anytime soon.
First, Chris blocked Winter from leaving the country. Then he brought her back to Blackwood Manor. And now he was even taking her to dinner at the garden restaurant.
But Skyla couldn’t afford to wait any longer.
She couldn’t keep letting things develop like this.
Winter had to die.
