Steve’s fists clenched at his sides.
The person who had told him was Fabian.
Back then, all Steve knew was that Chris had been quietly investigating the Scott family. But Chris was too careful, too airtight. He hadn’t let a single clue slip.
Later, when Fabian ordered him to kill Winter, Steve put on that whole show to push her onto the trending lists online. His goal had been to expose her identity so Fabian would think twice before touching her.
Instead, the moment Fabian found out Winter was Chris’s wife, he sneered, “Why would Chris Xander marry the daughter of the man who killed his parents?”
The second Steve heard that, a cold sweat broke out across his back. Only after pressing Fabian for more did he finally learn the truth about how his uncle and aunt had died.
Back then, Fabian had just been a teenage errand boy working at the border. But he was quick–witted and ruthless, and the local boss had taken notice of him and kept him close.
Fabian had seen Warren Scott secretly meet with that boss. He had also overheard Warren on the phone, telling him that everything had gone according to plan and that Mr. and Mrs. Xander were dead.
That was also when Steve first learned about the grudge between Chris and Fabian.
Ten years ago, just as Fabian was beginning to build real power at the border, Chris, working undercover, had set a trap that nearly wiped him out. It had taken Fabian years to recover and claw his way back.
And Fabian wasn’t the kind of man to let something like that go. He was vicious, petty, and the type to hold a grudge forever. If he could not get to Chris directly, then he would go after the people around him.
Could it really have been Fabian?
And if it was, then would Winter be in danger too?
If that was true, then by using online buzz to expose the fact that Winter was Chris’s wife, Steve had actually put her in harm’s way.
Leaning against the wall, Steve lit a cigarette. He bit down on the filter and took a long drag, his mind in complete turmoil.
Staring at Skyla, he warned, “I’ll find out whether it was really you who told Grandma. Until then, I’m warning you. Stay away from Winter.”
Skyla sneered inwardly. Did this idiot really think that just because Chris and Winter had broken apart, he could step in and take advantage of it?
He still had no idea Winter was about to leave the country.
In a calin voice, she said, “Of course. I have no reason to kill her.”

With everything that had happened after Mrs. Xander Sr.’s death, she had been so focused on staying close to Chris that she had completely forgotten about Winter’s application for the overseas correspondent post.
By now, the decision should already have been made.
She opened her contacts, found Jimmy’s number, and called him.
After a few rings, Skyla smiled and said, “Happy New Year, Uncle Jimmy.”
Then she asked, “By the way, has there been any update on Winter’s application?”
Whatever Jimmy said on the other end, the caregiver beside her could clearly feel the surge of anger and resentment coming off her.
Skyla narrowed her eyes. Her voice turned icy as she forced the words out through clenched teeth. “Who did you say?”
Her nails dug hard into her palm.
On the other end, Jimmy’s low voice repeated, “Chris personally called and had Winter’s name removed.”
