Chapter 219

“Was it you?”

A warm amber lamp flicked on in the room.

Steve’s face was twisted with rage, so close it was almost right in front of hers. He clamped a hand around Skyla’s throat and demanded through gritted teeth, “Was it you who told my grandmother?”

With his hand crushing her neck, Skyla could barely breathe. At a moment like that, with death so close, most people would have panicked.

But she sat there like a corpse, staring back at him with cold, lifeless eyes.

Her face had turned red from lack of air, yet she still managed to curl her lips into a smile.

A chill ran down Steve’s spine. His fingers jerked back as if he had touched something poisonous.

Air rushed back into Skyla’s lungs, and the force of it made her clutch her throat and cough hard.

Even as she coughed, Skyla kept her eyes locked on him. Her voice came out rough and hoarse. “An old woman dies, and this is how worked up you get?”

Steve’s expression darkened even more.

All his life, he had believed Mrs. Xander Sr. had always favored Chris too much.

Everyone liked to talk about the eldest line of the family and the eldest grandson, but Steve never bought that. In his eyes, the real reason was simple. Chris had lost both his parents young and grown up under Mrs. Xander Sr.’s care. She felt sorry for him. That was why she gave him all the best things.

The Xander Corporation.

The position as head of the family.

Winter.

What Steve hated most was this: after Chris’s parents died, it was Steve’s own father who had been running the Xander Corporation. So why was it that the moment Chris came back from the military, Mrs. Xander Sr. demanded that his father hand everything back to him?

She always framed it as Chris reclaiming what had been his all along.

And his pathetic father had actually gone through with it. He had really handed the CEO position back to Chris.

Not only had she refused, but not long afterward, she announced that Winter would be marrying Chris.

Steve regretted it bitterly now. If he had known Skyla was this vicious, he never would have used that secret as leverage in the first place.

After catching her breath over the armrest of the wheelchair, Skyla slowly straightened up and settled herself again. “I’m not the only one who knows the truth. What makes you so sure it was me?”

“Who else could it have been?” Steve bit back his rage and lowered his voice. “Now that Grandma’s dead, Chris is only going to hate Winnie even more. Isn’t that exactly what you wanted?”

“I’m not the only one who benefits from that,” Skyla said as she calmly adjusted the collar he had twisted out of place.

Then she looked at him and let out a cold laugh. “No wonder she never thought much of you. Just look at yourself. You don’t have the nerve to be truly ruthless, but you’re nowhere near decent either. What do you honestly think you’re ever going to become? One grandmother who never really cared about you dies, and you fall apart over it? Now there’s one less person in your way. Isn’t that a good thing?”

Steve leaned against the wall, his chest rising and falling with anger as he stared at her.

Skyla was far more dangerous than anyone had ever imagined.

Being around her felt like being cornered by a cold, venomous snake.

He narrowed his eyes. “So it really wasn’t you?”

Skyla said, “Didn’t you tell me someone else was the one who told you what Winter’s father did to Chris’s parents? How can you be so sure that same person didn’t tell your grandmother too?”
