Chapter 172

On social media, the trending topics about Winter kept getting pushed lower and lower. Everyone online knew perfectly well that someone powerful was stepping in behind the scenes.
As for whether Chris was the one suppressing the buzz and pulling the trending topics, no one really cared. They were happy to follow the crowd and keep insulting Winter.
Still, no matter how much the story was being buried, the news that Winter was Chris’s wife had already caused a huge uproar online.
In the dim room, Fabian got off social media, picked up his phone, and made a call.
The line was picked up almost at once. With a faint, knowing smile, he said, “Mr. Steve, why didn’t you tell me Winter Scott is Chris’s wife? Don’t tell me you didn’t recognize your own cousin-in-law.”
That day, when Steve saw Winter’s photo, he had acted like he didn’t know her at all.
Steve let out a cold snort. “I want Chris dead, so why would I care about his wife? If you say the word, Mr. Kane, I’ll kill her too. I didn’t mention it because there was no need.”
Fabian chuckled a few times. “Mr. Steve, you really are ruthless.”
He slowly thumbed the prayer beads around his wrist and smiled faintly. “But things are different now. I didn’t expect Winter’s background to be this complicated. Leave her alone for now, Mr. Steve. We don’t want to put Chris on alert.”
“What are you afraid of?” Steve said. “Chris doesn’t love Winter at all.”
Fabian’s thumb moved over the beads one by one as he replied meaningfully, “Doesn’t he?”
Because from what he had seen that night at Nocturne, that wasn’t true at all.
If anything, the opposite seemed more likely.
After the call ended, Steve’s expression looked especially dark in the vice president’s office. He tossed his phone aside, his palm damp with cold sweat.
He stared at the trending topics about Winter on his computer screen,
The first article claiming Winter had slept her way to the top was something he had arranged himself.
His goal had been to slowly draw out Winter’s background.
What he hadn’t expected was for Chris to admit their relationship so directly.
Winter frowned. Back then, the Scott family was just her and her parents. If Chris was investigating the Scott family, then he was really investigating her parents.
Why would he investigate them?
But she could already tell Steve was trying to drive a wedge between them again, and she refused to take the bait.
“Okay. Got it.”
Just before she hung up, Steve said in a low, heavy voice, “He’s been investigating the plane crash that killed his parents. That plane belonged to your family’s airline. Can’t you guess why he’s been looking into the Scott family?”
A sudden chill wrapped around Winter’s racing heart. Her blood ran cold, and her whole body went stiff.
“What do you mean?”
Her voice came out hoarse. She said it so softly it was almost a whisper to herself.
