A faint blush rose to Wendy’s ears. She lowered her voice and said, “Because I want to be your friend.”
Without warning, Winter threw her arms around her and hugged her tight.
Wendy froze
Winter took a deep breath of her perfume and instantly felt better. “You should’ve just said that. You were acting so awkward I almost thought you were trying to turn me gay.”
“Are you insane?” Wendy snapped, but Winter only held on tighter.
Winter gave her a pat on the back. “Thanks, Wendy. Seriously. What would I do without you? They’re all tearing me apart online.”
Wendy’s lips curved. “Obviously. You have no idea how good I am at fighting with people online. Just wait. If they want to come after you, I’ll go after them so hard they won’t know what hit them.”

By the end, her voice had almost disappeared. She stopped walking and looked down at her feet.
“Do you think I’m pathetic?”
Roy held out his phone.
“You’re rich. Who’s doing better than you?”
Winter laughed through the last of her tears. “Exactly. I’m rich.”
She picked up the gun and raised it to aim. Roy was just about to step forward and correct her grip when the phone in his pocket buzzed.
“Mr. Xander, the data from the black box has been recovered. Back then, Mr. and Mrs. Xander really were killed by the Scott family.”
