Chapter 169
It suddenly felt like every eye around her had turned in her direction.
What was going on?
A sharp buzz filled Winter’s ears. Frowning, she pulled out her phone and opened social media.
The trending topic hit her like a blow.
“Winter Scott and Chris Xander Are Legally Married.”
She tapped on it. The first post was an update Chris had made on his personal account just five minutes
earlier.
He had reposted the article and added one line.
“She is my wife.”
The second post came from Xander Corporation’s official account, reposting Chris’s statement.
That erased any doubt about whether the account was really his.
A personal account could be faked.
An official corporate account could not.
Just like that, the news that Winter was Chris’s wife exploded online and sent the entire internet into a frenzy.
Winter stood in the open lobby, her thoughts a tangled mess.
She had imagined Chris might have the trending topic pulled.
She had imagined he might ignore it entirely.
What she had never imagined was that he would step in and publicly clarify their relationship.
“She is my wife.”
Those four words lodged deep in her chest.
She backed out of social media, opened their chat, and tapped on his profile picture. She wanted to ask what he was thinking. He could have stayed out of it, so why had he chosen to say anything at all?
But her finger hovered over the screen and never moved.
She opened the trending topic again.
Just as she was about to close the page, one comment suddenly shot up the rankings at an alarming speed and landed in the top three.
@WendyFromTheStone Family: Oh please. If my husband hardly ever came home, but I had endless money to spend, could buy whatever I wanted, and go wherever I pleased, I’d be the happiest, most unbothered woman alive.
Winter froze.
The elevator doors opened behind her, and she heard a familiar voice call out.
“Winter!”
She turned around.
Wendy was striding toward her, worry written all over her face. “Why did you leave so fast? Where are you going?”
“Since I finally got a day off, obviously I’m going out to enjoy myself. After all, I have endless money, I can buy whatever I want, and I can go wherever I want.”
Winter smiled at her.
Wendy cleared her throat and looked away. “I… yeah, so what if I said that? I just couldn’t stand all those nasty people online. It’s not because…”
“Not because what?” Winter tilted her head.
