Game Over, Mr. CEO: Your Wife Is Done (Winter and Chris) novel Chapter 163

Chapter 163

Fabian’s words still echoed in Steve’s ears.

“That reporter came into my private room undercover. I don’t care what she managed to film. Anyone stupid enough to come looking for trouble with me deserves a quick death.

“Mr. Steve, I’ll be waiting for good news.

“I’m sure our partnership will only get stronger. With your position and my support, what’s to stop Xander Corporation and the entire Xander empire from becoming yours one day? I’ll be counting on you then, Mr. Steve.”

Steve knew that once he got dragged into that mess at the border, there was no turning back.

He took two hard drags from his cigarette, crushed it out, and started the car.

Late that night, he pulled into the underground garage of his villa, where his assistant stepped forward and opened the car door for him.

As Steve got out, he said, “Look into the bodyguard who’s been around Winter lately. The one who’s been showing up with Zion.”

“Yes, sir.”

The assistant kept pace with him and spoke in a low voice. “Mr. Steve, an internal disciplinary notice was sent to the executive team’s inboxes earlier this evening. It came directly from the Chairman’s office.”

Steve’s steps slowed.

Chris was now both Chairman and CEO of Xander Corporation. He rarely involved himself in disciplinary matters, so for a notice to come directly from his office was unusual. And notices like that were usually only circulated to executives when they involved senior personnel.

“Who was named?”

The assistant’s expression turned grim. “Keith Cook, Mark Lee, and…”

The first two names were men Steve trusted, though neither of them ranked high enough to normally

draw this kind of attention.

Steve stopped cold. A glass wall ahead reflected half his face in shadow. “Am I on that list too?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Chris went to the family hospital during the day and got trapped in the elevator. That set him off. The investigation found that the elevator hadn’t been serviced on schedule, and those two were the ones who had arranged the maintenance personnel. They skimmed off quite a bit of money.”

No wonder they had called him that evening. They had probably wanted him to step in and keep them inside Xander Corporation.

But at the time, he had been on his way to see Fabian and had not answered. And afterward, all he could think about was Winter. The two men had completely slipped his mind.

“Those two were fired outright. You got a pay cut.”

Steve didn’t care much about the pay cut itself. But Chris had gotten rid of two of his men in one shot, and that wasn’t something he could easily swallow.

But the assistant wasn’t finished.

“And the project that was supposed to go to you is gone too.”

“What?” Steve’s face darkened.

Under the pressure of his anger, the assistant lowered his head. “There’s more.”

Steve took the tablet from him and looked at the disciplinary notice in the email.

Winter ran after him, but the more she chased, the smaller the distance between them seemed to

become.

She looked down and saw that her body had become small too. She was wearing a little daisy-print dress, tears running down her face. Not far away, her mother and father lay dead in front of her, a gun still in their hands.

Winter opened her mouth, trying to cry out.

Then suddenly, her body lifted off the ground as someone pulled her into their arms.

A warm, soft kiss landed on her forehead.

“Were you looking for me?”

She jerked her head up and met a pair of cold, silent eyes.

“Chris Xander!”

Winter cried out and jolted awake from the dream.

She was breathing hard. Sunlight filtered through the gap in the half-drawn curtains, falling across her pale face. A thin layer of cold sweat covered her forehead.
