Chapter 162

Winter’s expression turned cold. She was just about to snap back, but the look on Steve’s face made a terrible thought flash through her mind.
“You know who I crossed?”
Even Zac didn’t know about Fabian. If Steve knew too, then there was a real chance he was the one in the Xander family working with Fabian.
As much of a troublemaker as Steve usually was, one of the Xander family rules had always been clear. No one in the family was allowed to touch illegal drugs or do anything that threatened public safety.
No matter how reckless he was, she still didn’t want to believe he could be that kind of person.
More than that, she hoped she had heard him wrong. Someone like that couldn’t possibly come from the Xander family.
Steve looked at her in the wind, at those clear eyes of hers. His thin black cashmere sweater clung to his upper body, and the violent rise and fall of his chest slowly began to calm.
He scrubbed a hand hard over his face, leaving red streaks across his pale skin.
Then he let out a short laugh. “What, you want me to help you deal with them? You’ve got this many bodyguards around you, so whoever you pissed off clearly isn’t small-time. I can help you, no problem. Same deal as before. Be with me, and I’ll do everything I can for you.”
Again.
Winter fought the urge to kick him and said impatiently, “What exactly did you want to talk to me about?”
Steve pulled a small red velvet box from his pocket and held it out to her. “It’s my birthday today. This is for you.”
So that was it. He had come to give her a gift.
She couldn’t even remember when it had started, but every year on his birthday, Steve would bring her something, even though she never acknowledged the day.
Actually, she did remember his birthday.
But growing up, Steve had messed with her more times than she could count, and she had never liked him.
Which was why she had never accepted a single gift from him.
“I don’t want it,” Winter said flatly.
But Steve grabbed her hand and shoved the box into it. “It’s a bracelet. I spent a long time picking it out. If you throw it away, I swear I won’t let it go.”

The second he said it. Winter made a move like she was about to throw the box away.
Steve’s face tightened. “You-”
But it was a fake-out. Instead, Winter tossed the box into the driver’s seat through the open car door
behind him.
“I don’t want your gift. You reek of smoke, so go home already.”
With that, she turned and headed back toward Roy’s car.
“He grabbed your hand just now. Flu’s been going around. Better not risk it.”
“You’re right. Better to be careful.”
Winter obediently pulled out two wipes and cleaned both hands.
Only then did Roy start the car and drive into the neighborhood.

Steve stood there for a while, watching the taillights disappear. Then he finally turned and got back into
his own car.
He picked up the red velvet box from the driver’s seat, put it into the center console, then lit a cigarette and took a hard drag.
