She couldn’t exactly ask Zion about it either. If she did, he would know she had been trying to get Roy to teach her how to shoot behind his back.

Winter sighed three times in a row.

Great. He had already been cold enough. Now he had turned into a complete block of ice.

She turned the wheel and merged onto the main road, leaving downtown behind.

The roads were full of out-of-town workers riding motorcycles home for the holidays. Winter eased off the gas a little so she wouldn’t startle them.

The sounds of motorcycle horns and engines rose and fell around her, sometimes near, sometimes farther off.

Soft music played inside the car.

But mixed in with the rest of the traffic were a few louder, harsher engine roars. They sounded completely different from the others, more like people chasing each other down the road.

Winter’s first instinct was that it was probably just a bunch of reckless guys racing.

Then she glanced into the rearview mirror.

Several Harleys were weaving through the line of motorcycles.

A faint sense of unease crept over her. Still, Zion’s car was right behind hers, and that reassured her a little.

Zion had noticed it too. Three bodyguards were in the car with him, and he immediately told the driver,” Stay close to Ms. Scott’s car.”

The car picked up speed.

But the second they accelerated, the noise of the surrounding motorcycles grew louder too.

The bikes that had seemed to belong to workers heading home suddenly swarmed toward Zion’s car like iron pulled to a magnet, boxing it in from every side.

One look was enough for Zion to catch the killing intent in the eyes behind those helmets.

“This is bad.”

They were not workers at all.

The entire group of so-called riders heading home surged forward and blocked Zion’s car, cutting off his view completely.

At the same time, the Harleys weaving through the pack sped after Winter’s car up ahead.

The tall, solid back. The broad shoulders. The cold, dangerous presence.

A powerful sense of safety washed over Winter at once.

It was Roy.

Men holding steel pipes rushed in from every direction. Roy kicked two of them to the ground, snatched a pipe away, then spun and hurled it from his hand, taking down three more in a row.

A vicious-looking man pulled a knife from the back of his waistband and lunged at Roy from behind.

Winter’s expression changed. “Roy, behind you!”

Roy turned, caught the man’s wrist with one hand, and broke his forearm in one swift move. Then he took the knife from him.

The blade spun once in his palm before he reversed his grip and drove it toward another attacker.

Winter watched in shock, her heart pounding.

Why did the way Roy flipped that knife suddenly remind her of someone else?
