The doctor answered honestly. “Based on how much blood Ms. Jasper lost, a transfusion technically wasn’t necessary. But her hemoglobin was too low, so we still gave her 200 cc of blood.”

Chris’s brows drew tightly together.

That was still not enough.

Just then, a bodyguard stepped up behind him and quietly said something in his ear.

The doctor was still waiting for Chris to give further instructions, but when he looked up, Chris had already turned and walked into the elevator.

In the ER lobby, Zac pulled off his white coat and tossed it aside before striding toward Winter. He placed both hands on her shoulders and quickly looked her over from head to toe.

“Are you hurt anywhere?”

He had been in surgery all morning. It was only after he came out that he heard there had been a terrorist attack at the Xander family senior care center’s opening ceremony. In the replay of the livestream that had been cut off halfway through, he caught sight of Winter, and panic hit him on the spot.

He called her, but she didn’t answer. Then he had someone look into it and found out she was at the hospital.

Now that he saw her standing there in one piece, the tight string in his chest finally loosened.

Winter shook her head. Hearing the sound of his breathing, she could tell he had run all the way over.

She didn’t have feelings for Zac in that way, but she still hated seeing him worry, so she gently tried to reassure him. “I’m okay, Zac.”

Hearing her say herself that she was fine finally eased the tightness in his chest, but the lingering fear still left his heart unsettled.

Winter could feel his hands tightening more and more on her shoulders. He was trying so hard to keep his surging emotions in check that even his fingertips were trembling.

Zac fought down the urge to pull her into his arms.

He wanted to hold her, to pull her tight against his chest and soothe the fear that was still clawing at him.

But reason told him that she still wasn’t divorced from Chris. If he hugged her in public now, all it would do was damage her reputation.
