Chris stopped beside Skyla’s wheelchair and signaled for the caregiver to pull back her coat.
A large patch of blood had already soaked through the white cashmere sweater underneath, and the wound was still bleeding.
The bullet had entered where her left shoulder met her collarbone.
It was not life–threatening, but it was the kind of injury that bled heavily.
A dark look settled in Chris’s eyes.
Half–conscious, Skyla lifted a hand that had gone cold from pain and shakily grabbed his sleeve.
“Chris, it hurts so much.”
Hearing Skyla’s suppressed cry of pain, Winter glanced over without thinking.
But Skyla’s caregiver shifted to the side and blocked her view. From Winter’s angle, it looked as if Skyla’s head was about to fall against Chris’s hand.
Winter was just about to look away when the caregiver suddenly cried out, “Ms. Jasper!”
Skyla had passed out.
Chris paused for a moment, then bent down and lifted Skyla into his arms.
Winter didn’t look at what happened after that. The second Chris picked Skyla up, she turned and hurried off to find her coworkers.
What happened to Skyla had nothing to do with her.
But she hadn’t expected both of her coworkers to be hurt.
Gavin stayed behind to deal with the aftermath, while the injured were all sent to the hospital in vehicles arranged by the Xander family.
As soon as Winter found out her two coworkers had also been taken to the hospital, she hurried toward the news van they had come in.
Just as she was about to shut the door, a hand pressed against it.
In the shifting light, Steve’s face looked faintly sinister.
“He leaned down with one hand braced against the car door and smiled at her. ‘So Chris really did leave you behind. Have you thought about my offer?‘
Winter knew what he was referring to. He had promised that if she chose him, he would do everything he could to help her get the divorce papers sooner.
To be honest, Winter had no interest in that offer at all.

But she had a fire burning inside her with nowhere to let it out, and Steve had walked right into it.
“I guess I got lucky,” she said lightly.
Around lunchtime, Winter went out to pick up food for her coworkers. She had just walked out of the ER lobby when she heard a warm but urgent voice call out to her.
“Winnie!”
“Mr. Xander, the bullet has been removed from Ms. Jasper’s shoulder.”
Outside the operating room, the doctor took off his mask and respectfully reported to Chris, who was standing in front of him.
The bullet had struck a relatively accessible area, so the surgery hadn’t taken long.
Chris’s voice was cool and flat. “How much blood did she lose?”
The doctor paused for a moment, almost thinking he had misheard. It wasn’t the kind of question people usually asked.
But Skyla was rumored to be Chris’s ex–girlfriend. Given that history, it wasn’t surprising that he would care about something like that.
