Chris picked up the cup on the coffee table like it was nothing. “It’s a small scrape. I’m fine.”

Skyla’s hand paused for a beat, but her expression didn’t change. Her voice stayed soft. “Then be careful when you shower. If it gets wet, dry it right away. Scrapes heal faster that way.”

She passed the ointment and cotton swabs to Mrs. Young. “Since he doesn’t want it, please put it away.”

Chris’s gaze dropped to Skyla’s knees. She followed his line of sight and realized that several raindrops from the storm outside had landed on her skirt, leaving visible damp spots on the deep blue fabric.

“Dry yourself off,” Chris said.

Skyla murmured, “Okay.” Then, remembering how much he valued cleanliness, she worried he might be annoyed. She nudged her wheelchair back a little, putting some space between their knees.

Her caregiver crouched down with tissues and dabbed at the wet spot.

Outside, it was rainy and cold. Inside, the house was warm.

Skyla reached for the cup on the table. Her hand suddenly trembled, and the tea slipped and spilled down near her legs.

“Oh my god, Ms. Jasper, are you okay?” the caregiver cried, panicked, checking her hands. “Did you burn yourself?”

Chris’s brows drew together. “What happened?”

Skyla’s lips looked a little pale. “I’m fine. My hand just went weak for a second, and I dropped it.”

The caregiver blurted out, “Ms. Jasper was so worried about you she came straight here without even eating dinner…”

“You don’t need to say that,” Skyla cut in quickly. “I didn’t have much of an appetite anyway.”

She didn’t want to appear as though she were using such trivial matters to fish for his sympathy.

The caregiver murmured, “But you’re anemic. If you don’t eat, you’ll feel weak.”

She remembered the funeral for Jacob. Skyla had gotten dizzy from anemia, slipped from her wheelchair, and hit her head hard. There had been blood everywhere.

After the caregiver finished blotting the tea from Skyla’s shoes, she went to wash her hands.

It was her first time at Blackwood Manor, and she didn’t know the layout. Without realizing it, she wandered into the back kitchen.

Mrs. Young was prepping ingredients. The caregiver walked straight over, bumped her aside, and reached past her to the sink, turning on the faucet to wash her hands.

“Make it right,” she said. “Ms. Jasper can’t handle spicy food. Don’t put any chili in her dishes.” Mrs. Young nearly lost her balance. She steadied herself, said nothing, and went back to chopping.

At Zac’s house, Dominic sat beside him with a first–aid kit on his lap.

“You really are something,” Dominic muttered. “Of all the women in the world, you had to fall for Winter.”

He dug through the kit for ointment and swabs. When he saw the split corner of Zac’s mouth and the scrape on the back of his hand, he frowned, his expression turning serious.

“Did you hear what Chris said? Even if he dies, Winter will still be the one listed as his widow on his headstone.”
