Chapter 111

The tech kept asking questions, but his eyes kept flicking toward the man standing by the exam table. He wore rimless glasses and gave off a cold, intimidating vibe. Without even realizing it, the tech’s voice turned more careful.

Winter shifted just enough to slip out from under the hand at her waist. “It’s happening a lot less. I only experience ringing once in a while, usually when I see people I dislike or have to deal with things I find repulsive. Much like right now.” 1

The tech nearly swallowed his tongue. The jab was obvious. He just wasn’t going to say who it was aimed at.

He cleared his throat. “Well… staying calm and keeping your stress down does help healing.”

“Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind,” Winter said.

Winter had barely stood up when Chris’s hand returned to her waist. He yanked her to the side and dragged her out of the exam room.

At the door, he let go when she tried to pull away, then reached down and caught her wrist.

“Where are you going?”

“Somewhere my ears can get a break.”

“To your Zac?” The jealousy in his tone wasn’t subtle.

Winter ignored it and shot back, “I thought you said you had no time before the holiday. What are you doing wandering around a hospital? Don’t tell me you came here for me. If you did, thanks so much. Now go home.”

That sharp tongue fit her job. No wonder she was one of the station’s top reporters.

Chris stared at her. His dark eyes gave nothing away.

Winter turned toward the elevator but pulled her foot back at the last second.

She faced him again, her tone finally settling. “Chris, I don’t care how messy things are between us. But can you stop messing with my job? It’s thirty minutes. Just do the interview. What do you get out of making this difficult for me?”

“When have I made anything difficult for you?” Chris asked, flat and almost bored.

Winter’s eyes brightened. “Okay. Then pick a time. This afternoon works.”

Footsteps approached. He turned as Zac came striding over, and the hint of a smile disappeared.

At the same time, Zac’s phone buzzed with a message from Winter saying she had already left.

Zac lowered his phone and looked straight at Chris. “What did you do to her?”

Chris said nothing. He just took off his glasses.

Dominic hurried over and grabbed Zac’s arm. “Are you out of your mind? Winter is Chris’s wife.”

“This isn’t your business,” Zac snapped.

Zac might look slim, but he was stronger than he seemed. Dominic couldn’t hold him.

Zac’s eyes stayed locked on Chris. “Why don’t you ask him why he keeps hurting her, but still won’t let her go?”
