Evelyn herself was freshly widowed. That "used goods" label applied much better to her than it ever could to Hazel.
Nellie adjusted her collar and stepped forward, shielding Hazel behind her.
She looked at Chloe and smirked. "You think Hazel is used goods?"
Nellie tilted her head, her gaze sliding slowly from Chloe to Evelyn, her eyes sparkling with dark amusement. "Then what about the woman standing next to you? If I remember correctly, she lost her husband not too long ago. Doesn't that make her used goods too?"
Chloe's face morphed in rage. "Shut up! You have no right to speak here!"
Nellie merely shrugged, unfazed. She stood firmly in front of Hazel, blocking the murderous glare Chloe was shooting her way, before her own expression turned entirely glacial.
"Don't push your luck. We gave you an inch, and now you think you can walk all over us?"
Her smile vanished, replaced by an icy threat. "Get out of the way, or we can settle this at the police station."
Chloe's eyes were red, her fists clenched tightly, and her chest heaving as her lips trembled.
She glared at Hazel, her eyes swirling with anger, grievance, and a childish sense of disbelief.
"Hazel, are you sure you want to make this ugly?"
Hazel looked back at her expressionlessly. "I'm not the one trying to make a scene."
Chloe took a deep, jagged breath and pulled her phone from her designer bag. She rapidly dialed a number and held it to her ear.
"Fine! I'm calling Julian right now. I'm going to make him come down here and divorce you!"
Hazel felt a spark of genuine hope. If Chloe could actually summon Julian here to finalize the divorce, she would consider it a fantastic turn of events.
Nellie clearly shared the sentiment. She raised an eyebrow, let out a cold scoff, and crossed her arms.
